I’ve been looking for a new toy rabbit for Freya and checked all the local pet stores, even the one I’m not allowed in today. (I’m not allowed because I always want to bring a bunny home.) They had three bunnies there. One was a little gray baby, looked maybe 2-3 months old and was in with a piggie. That seems like really poor pet store practice to me. They’re just asking for wierd diseases or an injured piggie. Anway, the other two were in together and were both mostly white with some black on them in spots. One has short hair and the other long. The long haired one doesn’t look like he’s ever been brushed in his entire life, his fur is all matted and he has bedding stuck in it. Oh, here’s a kicker, they use pine wood chip bedding. We left, I wanted to strangle someone. I still do. Sometimes pet store rabbits need rescuing as much as shelter rabbits, what kind of animal treats bunnies this way?

That’s just it, animals treat animals better than some ‘high-thinking’ humans do. >.<
Aw…the little grey one sounds so precious! (I have a soft spot for grey bunnies.)
Actually, they all sound precious! (I have a soft spot for all bunnies, can you tell?) ^_^
I’ve even started to really wish I could adopt a guinea pig when I see one available at my PETCO. Although I know the way they squeak would probably drive me crazy, but they are such sweet creatures.
I wish I could bring them all home with me! I rots that we can’t save them all. I hold my breath going into my local pet store for supplies simply because I know if I ever see another bunny in there, I will put a sleeping bag on the floor of the shop and camp out there until hubby lets me bring it home!
These pets deserve better than this.

I’m so tempted to print out a few pages from this site, grab Freya’s brush and march back there demanding to be allowed to groom that poor guy and make them change the bedding they use. Now that Freya has a condo there isn’t a bunny living in my bathroom anymore….

            nah, hubby would strangle me.

It sad but over here most pet shops keep rabbits in with pig’s and even tell you that they make great firends!

Oh here too. The pet store we got Ruby from kept her in with like three piggies. She’s still very skittish because of them I think.

we got gizmo from a pet store but we’ve really lucked out with him.

not thinking yesterday i was at the mall waiting for my boyfrend to finish boring boy stuff so i had a peek in the pet store.

they actually were letting people pet the poor terrified little bunnies! an open lid enclosure! they looked so sad

and further back they had little bunnies in tiny cages with a pellet dish and pine chips, and they were even eating the pine! oooh the tummy aches i bet they have

my boyfriend and I have been converted to House bunny slaves and it was very sad and i wanted to grab all of them and run away.

Right now we think when we retire we’re going to open a Bunny Shelter. there just too many of them

This is a common thing that happens all around the country. Many people still believe that piggies and rabbits can and should be kept together, and that pine shavings make great litter. The risks associated with both are not very well-known. It’s not just your petstore that does this. You can try, but I doubt that providing info will make them change these practices. You might be able to convince them to use carefresh or paper pellet litter, but it’s unlikely they will house rabbits and pigs separately b/c of the space involved.

We all do! I think if we all had the space and the money and the time…we’d have about two dozen bunnies each!!!

That’s pretty standard practice, unkept, pine bedding no straw, aquarium cages, kids reaching in.

I simply don’t buy from stores like that, and I write their head office once a year (more then that and I’d go mad) telling them why I don’t buy there. I do browse to see the condition the animals are in, and if I see bad things, I make a public stink at the front desk. I’ve seen people dump their purchases and walk out after seeing what I was pointing out….It’s awful but people buy them.

Use your dollars and vote for stores that dont’ sell animals.

Great job, Kokaneandkahlua!! The world needs more people who will stand up like this – great.

Here in Denmark the govenment is working on a law, so that anyone working in or owning a pet store has to have a certain education focused on animals. I hope that will help. At least some of them may actually find out that they are dealing with living beings.
