Ok I took everyones advice on board and I was not going to get another bunny for a good 6 months, I was going to get one through a rescue shelter.  My sister and I both got off work early so started making the rounds of the pet stores to find some new stuff for Bugz.  I thought we did well, we got a chew thing, a fabric tunnel a bright orange cardboard tunnel, a wooden chew tunnel and then we found a place selling cheap carpet and got a rug for infront of his cage for $10!

So doing well, also got a harness for free and every store we went into they shoved baby bunnies under our noises (baby bunnies that cost over $100, the cheapest we got offered was $60!)

Here is part of what we got

Anyway we where wrapping up when we saw this petshop that we did not know existed so in we go looking for more Bunny items for Bugz and we see 2 pens full of baby bunnies. One marked male and one marked female.  We are looking when my sister notices something and well there is this TINY TINY little bunny in the female cage that looks a little out of place, my sister and I both ask to see her and well it was  she was wet from sitting in a puddle of her own urine, she had poo stuck all over here, she has a distended belly and seem to lack all desire to more.  That was shocking but add to that the lady picked her up by her ears!

So we demand to speak to the manger, i was speaking to him while my sister was trying to clean up the little girl, she was talking to one of the staff members who said that this little girl was born out the back and was only 5 weeks old and her mother was sold, the manger on the other hand was telling me she was fine and that she was 10 weeks old.  Well after some arguments and maybe a bit of threathening on my behalf we leave the pet shop with one baby rabbit at little to no cost! (so I am considering her a rescue).

A trip via bunnings to get some more NIC squares (still managed to run out of cable ties so part of the cage is held together with masking tape till I can get back there tomorrow).  We got home, my sister started to research the web about washing a bunny and she got washed, dried and we drip feed her some water with glucose (sp?) in it.  She seems a bit better and I will be on the vets door step tomorrow morning when they open.  I have no clue what breed she is or if she is infact a female! (here is hoping she is!)

So i guess I had better introduce you to Anya

Bugz is running around like a mad man as i think he can smell her in the next room.  i am doing a bit of quarrantine incase she has anything nasty that he could catch.  Once she gets the all clear from the vet then i will move them into the same room.  Bugz is booked in Friday week to get everything cut off so it will be a good three or four weeks before they will offically met.  in the mean time can anyone suggest anything else I should do for her tonight?  She was been drinking water and played with a celery top but not much more then that.  Bunnies wean at 4 – 5 weeks so god knows when she last had a drink of milk, I would get some forumla but everything is closed now or should i go to the 24 hours K-Mart?

I can’t weigh in with immediate help, but if you search the posts using the search button and keyword Babies, you should find several posts about new babies that will contain advice on care and feeding that can help you right away.

It was good of you to rescue this baby since they left her without her mother. That’s a really awful sounding shop, and I urge you to contact your local Animal Control office (usually listed under local gov’t. departments) and report the shop and give their whereabouts. Sounds like they violate conditions for their animals and need to be inspected at the very least. A fine might clean up those cages.

RabbitPam – planning on doing that, we took a TON of pictures before we got her 100% cleaned up and also my sister snapped some on her mobile of the pens and the conditions ( which looked ok but really where not) Will go do a search now. My sister got her to eat some shreaded carrot so that is good I think

She’s pretty. We wouldn’t get mad at you. Pet stores are the worst with animals! As long as she is eating on her own she should be fine – give her pellets and fresh water and hay.

We’re not mad silly-I think none of could have walked away without at least one in tow!!!

Try phoning the spca/humane society near you and report what you saw (sick babies, under eight weeks old seperated from mom) there are laws about that stuff in almost all states/countries and they should be able to investigate http://www.aspca.org/fight-animal-cruelty/reporting-cruelty-faq.html

                        She’s adorable!! I just saw her pic in another post and started searching for threads started by you to see where she came from Let us know what your vet says! {{Healing Vibes}}

10 to 1 odds that they haven’t sexed the babies correctly and in two months they have 4 times the number of rabbits they do now.

What a cute little thing.  She can start on pellets and hay.  Poor thing had to leave her mother at 5 weeks.  She must be so lost.

So cute! You did a good thing. The only good thing about her being so young is that she will at least not be pregnant. One thing in her favor! To me, she looks like a Silver Marten, maybe a mix with that breed. If you get a picture of the fur behind her ears I could tell you for sure if she is Silver Marten or Otter color, but that would not really tell the breed since both colors can be on about any breed of rabbit. Not that it matters what she is, she’s just cute!

She’s so adorable. Poor little baby. We have only one local petstore that sells bunnies and my husband says I can’t go there anymore. Every time I do the only thing that used to stop me from bringing one home was that Freya still lived in the bathroom so there was nowhere for it to live. I don’t know what would stop me now… probably nothing. I doubt I would have walked away from that baby and I’d be plus a bun and a mad husband. The pet store here does treat buns ok I guess… for a pet store. I just see them in cages and wonder what kind of horrible person is going to buy them and if they’ll ever be treated right. Keep more pics coming, she’s so beautiful we need to see more of her.

What a nice thing you did for that baby and what a cutie! ^^ I reported a pet store to the animal control here, and told them everything about it. The lady on the phone wasn’t very nice though, I hope they really go investigate.

MarkBun – HA HA HA HA HA thanks!

Well just picked her up from the vet only cost me $69 and she was there half the day. She is eating and drinking by herself and also going to the toliet. her poop is a little soft but it also has worms in it :pukeright: so they gave her a worming med and also a board spec antibiotic. We gave her a smaller then normal dose of the vaccine as you are suppose to give it to them when they are approx 3 months but as we don’t think is is there we rang the makers and found out that if there is an outbreak of we believe she has been in contact with an infected rabbit then we can give a different dose so we did that. Other then that she seems fine. They tried her on some rabbit milk stuff but she was not intrested which either means she is older then we think OR she has been weaned and does not want to go back. Going to keep a close eye on her over the next few weeks and we will go form there.

Oh also rang the RSPCA and reported also rang another group that regulates pet shops that my local pet shop told me about and have reported will keep you updated

Also vet confirmed she is a she!

Previous advice given on getting a 2nd rabbit is just that – Advice. Yours to do with as you will. Most of us herewould have our own self imposed rules can go out the window when face with a rabbit in need.! So congratulations and thank you for giving this bunny a better chance. Very irresistable face she has!! Hope you get a healthy vet report.

Glad to know you will report the store. Don’t be dejected if you think it comes to nought. It may be that there has to be a certain number of reports against the store will result in official investigation. Sadly, this is how it works with children in less than ideal care before something is done.

                                            Love the caption! ^

Edit: Just read you update (posted same time).  Good to hear she’s ok.  She might just drink water and try pellets by now.  Maybe give a shallow bowl of water along with a sipper bottle also.

In that condition, she surely would have died probably within hours of you being there had you not rescued her.
Good for you! And Godspeed that the RSPCA does something immediately about the rest of those bunnies, most likely whatever Anya had it will be spreading through the rest of the babies. Sad.
                                              I hate pet stores. >.<

But happily, one story has ended well. She is beautiful! Congratulations!

Oh she is adorable and so lucky you and your sister rescued her from those terrible conditions. I dislike petstores too, they don’t treat their animals well at all. I went into get Valen some toys when I first got him and the clerk said, “you buy toys for your rabbit?” I said yes, they need stimulation and things to chew and toss. She said, “maybe that’s why my bunny always looks bored!” Then I took her and showed her acceptable toys for her bunny. I hope she bought them after her shift!!
I am glad you reported that store too, poor helpless animals deserve better care

I am glad she is fairly healthy, I am sure with some extra TLC she will be a strong lil girl. She has been through so much already, poor thing! Spoil her and give her lots of love

If she has worms, there’s a 95% probability that the rest of the rabbits will have worms too.  I’d probably let the spca know that as well.
