So, today was d-day for me to go fetch Howl.. the little black and white boy bunny who was going to live with myself , SO and Maro. I get to the store and the lady tells me my rabbit was stolen that morning. He had been there for two weeks until I had the cash to get the perfect cage etc.. for my new little house-bun and on the day - gone. I'm gutted. Just thinking about what's going to happen to this bunny taken by people who couldn't even be bothered to pay for him.... it's really heart-breaking. He will probably end up abandoned somewhere . He would have had such a good life here - it really freaks me out. I had everything in place to provide an awesome loving home for this bun... I'm just gutted now.

She showed me some other bunnies she had at her house, but it's not the same. I wanted him. I chose him, paid for him and visited him whilst I was waiting. I've been waiting three years for the right situation to provide a good bunny home. In the end all she could do was keep saying how sorry she was and give me a refund. This is possibly the worst day I've had this year.

Wow...that is scary. I do hope she contacted the police and that the bunny is safe. I hope they have security cameras.

I'm sorry for you and for the bunny too. People who do this are very scary and I cannot see that they have good intentions.

Take your time to find another bunny too that will have your heart if you decide to get another one. I know there is another bunny out there that needs you.

oh that is so wrong! how could anyone do that. Too bad the bunny wasn't like my Lola, she'd had bitten right through to their rib bones if someone had stuck her under a shirt. I hope someone finds the bunny. Maybe she'll wind up at the local shelter before too long.

so sorry for you, Kathy

Omigosh!! That is awful I hope she called the police too! People do awful things and don't think about the people and animals they hurt in the process. I feel so bad that this happened to you. When you are ready to look again, the perfect bunny will be waiting for his new home with you. *Hugs*

Not to be suspicious and paranoid, but it sure is ironic that the day you come to get the bunny, that bunny has been stolen.  Makes me just sort of wonder if it could have been by an employee. I mean, aren't kids in school right now? So the morning hours would have to have been taken by an adult....sort of strange.   I know that sounds awful, but it just sort of popped into my mind.

Does the store have any security cameras? Did the lady say what they did as far as reporting it?

Oh no, thats terrible.
Just wondering, but if your bunny was on hold because you had already paid for it, maybe it was pinched by someone who had wanted to buy it, and was a bit agro because it was on hold for you?
Did anyone ask if they could purchase the bunny, and the shop owner refused? Was there a sign that the bunny was on hold?
What weighs 35 tonnes, has four fuzzy ears and is 80 million years old? Two rabbits riding a brontosaurus.

Oh my gosh, thats just wrong. Who would STEAL a bunny? Poor thing, they better love it to bits. And build a house just for the bunny and wait on it paw and other paw. (instead of hand and foot... get it?) I'm so sorry you weren't able to bring your bunbaby home

Hi, the police around here are fairly pointless. Also the shop has no security cams, so I don't think the woman has reported anything. She said there were a lot of out-of-towners around that day, and she was alone in the shop (lame, isn't it?)

I'm REALLY wondering about this possibility too. Somebody bought my bun's brother, and maybe they wanted him too but were told no, so they stole him?
It is also a possibility that the woman just sold him, but I really doubt it. She knew I was going to buy the most expensive cage, toys food etc for the my bun that morning. Doesn't make sense to shoot herself in the foot like that, unless she just thought I would be happy to take any rabbit

Doesn't sound like she is responsible store owner if she is holding a bunny for you and allows somone to be able to steal him. The whole situation is strange. I hope she did give you your money back? Maybe you could look into a shelter or humane society in your area. You would be saving a life

I would love to rescue a bunny, but as I live in South Africa I'm having a hard time finding anywhere with rescue rabbits. There are "breeders" but none close enough for me to go look without a car.

well, I just found out my SO's father is coming to visit and driving thru johannesburg - north of me - and he has offerred to pick up a bun from a breeder if I find one I like. Spoke to a lady who has Netherland dwarfs and she is sending me photo's of a little grey, blue-eyed boy later today. Will take a look and see. I'm actually a bit 50/50 about it right now... keep hoping my phone's going to ring and the woman from that shop is going to say somebody found my bunny somehow (yeah, it's silly)

I am very sorry for your loss. I know how it is to have an animal stolen. I had a guinea pig actually stolen from my backyard when I was a little girl. I thought maybe perhaps my parents lied and she died, but no. She was actually taken from my very backyard. I hope whatever happened to that rabbit that it's being well taken care of and loved It's kind of strange someone would go into a pet store to just take a rabbit. I have a little suspicion that she might have just accidentally sold him. Just like MB said, I am sure you will find a bunny soon that will take away your heart once again. I'm like 95% sure that the lady just sold him out from under you and didn't have the guts to own up to it.

I'm afraid I'm a tired cynic today, but I agree with BB and am suspicious too.
It is possible that the woman sold him to someone, and out of towner, earlier that day and told you that since she couldn't tell you the truth. You had rights to the rabbit since she had your money. If she convinced you to buy another, she would have sold two, plus stuff for two, doubling her profit for the day. It is very, very odd that someone would have been able to just steal a held rabbit the same day.

The pix of the other one sound nice. Do you like him enough to take him?

i thought this as soon as i read your first post, she probaly sold him, and had to think up an excuse.

very sad but probably more likely than him being stolen,

sorry you lost him either way, sounds like he would have had a fantastic home with you.

hope you find another you like soon

What about adopting through classifieds or online sites like (or similar to) Petfinder? Sometimes these adoptions can be considered rescuing also, depending on the rabbits current situation.

edit: With that site katie.hedger posted, it just says they won't post adoptions until full network is up.  Surely they have animals for adoption though??

Thats awful. The Bun might not be in your hands, but there could be a possibility that the stealer had good intentons. I know it sounds silly, but you know those stories of poor little children stealing bread from shops cause there hungry? They aren't EVIL are they? I'm not trying to say it was right to steal the bunny, but now that the odds of him returning are slim, just hope that the bunny is ok. I'm sure that no one could have come in to the store and stolen the cutest bunny there to kill? I dont think any human can possibly be that cold hearted and cruel. Maybe the stealer was someone who wanted the bunny originally? Maybe they were worried that you couldn't possibly take as great care of him as they could? And they finnally cracked and grabbed him? Maybe a Little boy or girl fell in love and NEEDED that bunny.Maybe a parent had lost their spouse, and wanted to get that bunny so they could break the news to their children? I know these sound stupid, but it's possible right? Every night just pray that he's ok, warm, safe, and full. He might come back to you, who knows? The world is funny in that sort of way. I wish I could help more.

Kyoshi, it doesn't sound lame, just interested and concerned.

One thing to be aware of as a newer member, because we all do this at times, is replying to older posts may make the reply outdated.
