I was wondering if it is possible to have the agouti gene expressed in a rex fur; as agouti has three bands of color in each hair is this possible to show up in the short fur of a rex? Or, rather what would it look like? I love rexes and agoutis so this is why I’m wondering.

I’m pretty sure they do but maybe they don’t call them agouti. I think the castor’s are agouti’s too, but I’m not an expert with this at all.

You’re right. I looked it up and it seems as though castor is genetically-speaking a type of agouti. Wow. those agouti rexes are handsome!

I’m not sure. I did a lot of research on otter colors (trying to find the difference between otter and Silver Marten). I found this site and it shows a lot of colors, both recognized and not. http://www.geocities.com/falls_acre_rabbits/mr-colors.html
I didn’t see any agouti, and I think that even though it is the ‘natural’ color of rabbits it has probably been long lost by more dominate gene colors. I am sure that someplace out there is a mix rabbit with agouti color and rex fur, but it isn’t a common color.

Also, it could be that agouti shows up completely differently on rex fur and thus is called a different color.

Pepe, the bunny in my avatar is an agouti but also my Toffee rabbit is an agouti but she has alot more black than brown in her ticking and my Peppermint rabbit who is a Dutch has the ticked fur which is more black than brown which I also consider agouti. I guess because too that the rexes have such short fur that the bands of color may not be as contrasted as the regular short hairs too.

That’ s what I was looking to find out. What color or colors that would be. The agouti gene seems to be very complex and to comprise many colors. It’s quite intriguing.
