This has been a rather frustrating beginning to fall as now the really nasty buggers come out in force. In fact, I’m nursing several bites like the one pictured below. (please pardon my ghostly skin and razor burn) The cause is the dreaded black fly that is ironically called “white socks”.

So far I’ve used ammonia pen, hydrogen pyroxide, neosporin, calamine, benadryl, ANYTHING to get them to stop itching, but they are definitely causing obnoxious reactions on my skin this year. Does anyone else onboard have to deal with bites from these flies? If so, what do you do about them? I’m tempted to burn a needle and lance the boil in the center to get some relief! I even have one on the hard part of my outer ear!

(black fly description at the bottom of the page)

Well, don’t tell my nursing profs this, because they’d be horrified, but I just do the old fashioned thing and scratch mine until they bleed! lol. Honestly, I find that they itch unbearably unless the skin is broken. Then they just sting, which I find far preferable to itching. Good luck!

You could trya bakind soda past applied tot he bites several times a day, witha ration of 3 teaspoons baking soda to 1 teaspoon water. Its what my mom used on me when we were little, cuz baking soda was soo much cheaper than the stuff sold in stores specifically for bug bites

Funnily 3 things that you may have around for bunny care/housekeeping may help.
Baking soda as Monkey bun said
Or dab vinegar on – though I imagine that would sting!
Papaya or papaya tablet! You could crush one, make a paste and apply. Papain (from papaya) is the active ingredient some creams that you can apply to bites, stings burns etc

Or if you have tea tree oil (antiseptic properties) or lavendar oil around – they might help too.
