I have a 1 year old dutch rabbit named Heidi I got in June from the SPCA, and I’m not sure what to use for bedding. Is it okay to just use shredded newspaper, like, the Boston Globe or something? She eats it sometimes, too. I was just hoping it was cause its a lot cheaper than going to Petco and actually buying bedding.

        So, can you help? lol

welcome to BB. i don’t believe i have ever met you. nice to see a new face thats great you got your bunnie from a local SPCA. i give my rabbit newspaper to shred. its a fun toy for flooring, i would suggest card board(its hard to clean up pee messes, it soaks in. make sure your bunny is litter pan trained) or tile. the tile would last a really long time, and the messes(if she misses the litter pan) its easy to wipe up. those are my two fav floorings to use!

ohhh yea. newspapers fine, but look into chew proof flooring like tile

                Welcome!

It’s ABSOLUTELY Ok and safe to use newspaper. Shredded is fun for them to dig in too

It’s not as absorbant as other bedding so you’ll have to change it a bit more often-but it’s free and edible

If you are trying to littertrain your bunny- newspaper is fine as a litter- but you do not want to use any bedding in the rest of the cage as the bunny is likely to view the whole care as a litterbox.  I use woodstove pellets as litter for my bunnies, and the rest of their pen is covered with a fleece blanket.  They get the hang of littertraining since the “living area” is so different than the “potty area”.

It might be confusing to a bunny if you use loose bedding/litter in the cage other than in the litter pan.  But cardboard and newspapers are fine to use as long as the bunny figures out that there are different areas.

yes, when i adopted her she was already being littertrained there, and so far she’s been very good with that, i’d say 70 percent of the time she goes, its in the litterbox, which is good, its easier to clean

and yeah, she’s a chocolately colored dutch, about 9 pounds. i’m pretty sure she’s stopped growing now

wow. 9 pounds… pretty big…compared to what im used to. my dutch rabbit is 3 pounds. he’s on the smaller size of rabbit hehe good luck with the litter training.

I agree it’s absolutely fine, just isn’t as odor absorbant as compressed paper pellets.

Yup, it’s totally okay to use newpaper as bedding, its really fun for them to dig into! Just make sure the newpaper’s ink is soy-based, if it isn’t then she may die from the ink.
