You can now successfully upload your avatars ONLY through "My Profile".  There is an area with an avatar upload option in "My Forum Settings" - but it does not work from there.  I know...then why have it!  It's too complicated to explain, but we will be getting rid of that on the next update (soon)

Troubleshooting Tips  

(These are separate tips to try, not that you have to follow them in any order.)

• Double-check that you uploaded via "My Profile" not via "My Forum Settings" 
  
• Refresh your page (F5)
  
• Clear your cache - You do this on on the browser you are using.  See the instructions below
  

              Internet Explorer - go to "Tools", then click on "Delete Browsing History".  Then ONLY check boxes                        "Temporary Internet Files" and "History".    Be sure to UNCHECK all the rest including "Preserve                              Favorite Website Data" (if you have the updated version that says this)

              Mozilla - Click  "Tools" and choose "Clear Private Data" 

              Chrome - Click on the little Wrench on the right hand side, then click on "Clear Browsing Data"

• If  you are unsure of the size of the photo is causing a problem,  then resize it to fit within 500 by 500 px limit and upload.

IF it still is not uploading after you have tried these tips, then post to this thread and we'll try to figure it out. 

 It seems if you change profile picture, it shows up as the avatar. Is there a way to have different profile pic to avatar pic?
