Okay, I know I have all the patience of a boiling tea kettle, but now I’m becoming frustrated with Mimzy’s current antibiotic therapy.

We’re four days into it. And just like the last time…no real sign of improvement. He’s still blowing goobers and sneezing at certain times of the day (late night, evenings around five pm, that sort of thing). I can’t find any correlation between house humidity or temperature and his nose problems. But I do wonder if his shedding fur is getting into his nose and causing his trouble that way? Also when he eats his hay, he tends to go into a sneezing fit…or his pellets. Alleriges? But Benadryl didn’t help him either.

Also, could he have some kind of physical abnormality (being a lop) that could be causing this problem? This could be normal nasal disharge, but it’s just getting collected in a deep sinus cavity that it can’t drain from properly? I’d hate to have to keep putting him on meds if it’s something that’s going to have to be corrected by surgery.

Any opinions? Going to consult my vet of course, but I want some ideas to throw at her.

If his nosey is stuffed and runny he may sneeze when he eats because he can’t breathe and chew too well so he’s trying to clear his nose. Allergies build, so he may have multiple allergens at the moment with the shedding. Or he just has a good old fashioned cold. I think you need to call the vet, get her ideas, and wait a bit longer, like at least 4 more days unless he gets worse.
Wait, the mail just came. Hold on a minute.
          Yea, I got a letter! Must share…
          Dear Rabbitpam,
I am writing to ask you to talk to our mommy. We think she doesn’t luv us anymore. She only fusses over Mimzy. Ok, Fiver got sick so she fussed over him too. OK, I think she doesn’t luv ME anymore. Do I have to get sick 2? I don’t wanna. But she doesn’t have my picture up on BB and she doesn’t have Fiver’s picture up and you know I am so pretty that I think it should be just me not those boys so please ask my mummy to give me a cuddle and put my picture up on her signature or at least give me lots and lots of treats to make me feel better NOW. Mimzy keeps sneezing. It’s gross. I’m cuter.
Thank you very much your friend Pip.

Perhaps he would benefit from nebulizing. You can nebulize some medications – I’ve used amakacin in the past but my rabbit did not have what Mimzy has so I’m not sure amakacin is sensitive to his infection but perhaps something else is that can be used in a nebulizer.

I also used amakacin with my little plague-bunny (chronic pasteurella) and that plus a switch in antibiotic finally did the trick for the most part.

Now that she’s mostly not having symptoms, I’m supposed to watch her for symptoms and if she starts sneezing again I pop her back in the nebulizer-chamber (aka “The StinkyBox”) for a treatment and then she’s fine for a couple more weeks

Awww I think it takes time for antibiotics to work {{Mimz}} just hang in there!

*gravity hath no fury like the guilt trip*
Actually, I’ve been enjoying the morning pen cleaning with Pip because I am not allowed any housekeeping duties until we have had a thorough grooming, noserub session and treat. I have to do these things if I want to keep my fingers. X_X

Okay, I’ll have to look up nebulizing. Does it involve putting the whole bunny in a ‘stinky box’ or just his nose? Although I’d hate to think this is something I’m going to have to deal with chronically. I wish I could suss out the cause, it’s driving me crazy.

And yeah, going to talk with the vet before the week is out. I also have to find out if the xrays of Mimzy’s face/head and chest from two months ago were ever sent to my new vet. I hope we don’t have to repeat those.

It’s possible to use a face-mask with a nebulizer, but I couldn’t see my bossy little princess putting up with that, so I built her a treatment chamber out of a large rubbermaid tub.  I put in some apple sticks and an old towel she could take out her frustrations on – I’m not sure there is a 2″ patch without a hole now!

Chronic conditiond can be annoying, but as recently as 8-10 years ago these conditions would have been an automatic death sentence for a bunny, so I’ll put up with the occasional treatment.

Thanks wendyzski! Would you mind terribly posting pix of your setup? I’d like to see it.

Called the doc today, she set up a time on next Friday morning to bring him in if he isn’t showing any further improvement. She and I are both thinking a redux of the radiographs is in order, because if he has an abscess or other similar ailment that the first vet missed, the meds he’s on are not going to help.

I hate doing this to him again. But I can’t take the chance. It would kill me to lose him (or any of my bunnies for that matter, but he’s really my baby.)
I called my first vet today to ask if we could take the xrays to the new vet. Boy did the receptionist sound frosty when I asked her that. I have to go pick them up and then return them after the consult is over. Can you believe that?

I used to work for a vet and they always kept their radiographs. They would release them for consults but they were always returned so I think that’s a pretty standard practice…even though since we pay for them we should be able to bring them home and frame them if we want to.

Mimz – I am sorry that you have to go through all this and I sure this will finally be the solution to find the problem so it can be correctly treated. I know, especially with infections that can up in the bone, it can be be like a treasure hunt so I am glad your vet wants to revisit this.

It’s too bad that the receptionist got all “frosty”! I do know that as TARM mentioned that they allowed me to “borrow” them without a problelm. My other vet actually offered to send them back for me. I thought that was nice and everyone was happy. But you do think you “own” them since you paid for the process so no one should get frosty with you. They should just politely explain.

                            Keep us updated.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I figured the xrays had to be their property (it’s that way with human medical records) but I was just put off by how the receptionist seemed offended that I would go to another vet. Give me a break! >_<

Anyway, Mimz has finished his meds today. Still no real change. I guess we’ll be going in first thing Friday then. I want to get this cleared up. *nods* If he wasn’t so spry and eating and pooping well, I’d really be concerned!
Will be sure to let you all know how it goes, of course.

Amelia (my white lop) is having the same issues now. She sneezes and gets a little bit of mucus in her nose from time to time throughout the day. For her, it seems to be whenever she gets new pellets. Does Mimz go totally crazy for pellets? Because Amelia does and sometimes I think she goes so crazy that she sucks the pellet dust up her nose

Well Moo, he used to like his pellets…and he still eats them…but he’s not as enthusiastic as he used to be about them since I switched to Oxbow a few months ago. (I think they aren’t as sugary as the old pellets.)
I also notice that when he eats anything with a crunchy consistency lately he seems to make these odd noises, kind of like guinea pig squeaks. I feed him those APD cookie treats once in awhile (and the barley biscuits from Dr.s F&S) and he really has to crunch to get them down. Hence why we’re going to repeat the radiographs. Something may have changed in three months’ time.
