Hey y’all I know I have been terribly remiss with the weight loss support group…things have been totally crazy for me with work, shopping for a car and my recent work-out routine is a KILLER.  So anyway, I am here now to whip you all into shape!   What’s new with you?  How was your last weigh in?

When I first started I was 209 pounds and now am at 159.  So in all, I’ve lost 50 pounds and have gone from a size 22 to a size 10.   Pretty amazing when I think about it and I’ve actually lost more fat than that because of the muscle I’ve gained.  It’s taken me 5 months to get to this point, seeing my personal trainer once a week and now I’ve been sorting through my summer clothes which are ALL too baggy!  …which means I have to buy more clothes…yikes.  This after I’ve bought a brand new car.  Oh well.

My diet has changed some and I am now at a 1,850 calorie diet where I am to eat 93 grams of protein, 278 grams of carbs & 40 grams of fat.  It has taken me two weeks to adjust to this “new” allotment of calories and it wasn’t easy with the protein…protein seems to always be my issue and rotates back around on me like a treadmill.  However, I *think* I have now mastered it.  I eat yogurt, which is O.K., BUT the little single-serving cottage cheese rocks with 90 calories and 10 grams of protein so I opt for that instead and rather than juice, I make my protein smoothies with skim milk which 8 ounces adds 8.4 grams of protein which is pretty big for such a tiny amount. Another real obstacle for me was dealing with the fat, I was going way over as it was hard to eat more protein with very little fat.  Cottage cheese, skim milk and protein bars have saved me.  I really like the EAS Myoplex Lite bars in the chocolate chip crisp with a glass of skim milk. YUM!  I feel like I am cheating on my diet and one bar only has 190 calories! It makes a really nice dessert/bed-time mini-meal after a hard evening work out.  It has 15 grams of protein & 26 grams of carbs but only 4.5 grams of fat.

I know I am totally rattling on here, but for those of you who are not just doing cardio – which burns calories like crazy and is a way to boost that weight loss, and you are doing weight-training you need to feed your muscles.  When you lift weights you are tearing the tiny fibers in your muscles and they need protein to re-build, hence why you should wait 1 day between working the same muscle.  More muslce is a good thing as it burns more calories when you are at rest (no you don’t need to look like Arnold Shwarznegger either) and you don’t have to work out quite so hard or so often, daily acitivties will help you do that.  I have found that your lifestyle does need to become more active when you are not at the gym, like take a walk, do a load or two of laundry – in other words, get off your duff or the pounds pack back on.  What I am getting at is that if you just do cardio like mad, you will really always be doing cardio like crazy and/or on a restrictive diet.  Just take this for an example: Say I want to eat a donut, which is about 250-300 calories, that is 20-30 minutes of intense cardio just to burn that one donut off.  If you want to maintain, can you imagine all the cardio you would have to do to compensate for the meals you eat?  I’ve estimated that my housework burns about 300 calories and for those of you who are interested here is an estimate of calories you burn:

This one is from the American Cancer Society Web Site:

        http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/c…Counts.asp

Here is a neat calculator for calorie burning:

        http://www.healthstatus.com/cbc.html

What I really want to emphasize is that diet is not the answer and neither is starving yourself or taking diet pills, so please take care of yourselves.  If you are having trouble with diet, try joining a weight loss support group like Weight Watchers or even going to see a Registered Dietician to help you figure things out.  Exercise should be fun and when you first start, it does seem like a chore but just think of those pounds you are fighting off and melting away.  Soon you will enjoy going to the gym and get that “runners high” from it, but don’t over-do it either.  I got my motiviation from not letting the fat win.  I was letting collect on my body and take over my life.  I never took the stairs, sat on my butt and watched T.V. and did nothing.  I had an epiphany one day when I looked at myself in the mirror and was totally disgusted.  That was November 8th of last year.  Since then I have never looked back and will not allow it to take over ever again.  I feel so wonderful, happy, healthy and great I would not trade it for the world.  So, if you are struggling I hope that I can help inspire you to stay motivated.  I had to be my own motivater and have some tricks and tips to help you out:

        • Don’t let the “little” voice win that tells you it is O.K. to have that hamburger or candy “just this once.” I thought about how much cardio it equated to in order to burn it off.  That turned me off of it.  Stop consuming sugar and go for sugar-free foods which help combat that craving.  I found that if I eat sugar, I crave it more.  Splenda is a wonderful thing (if you are able to have it).
        • Fat is your enemy, you are trying to destroy it, don’t let it grow.  Picture it just falling off when you are working out on the elliptical, treadmill etc.
        • Finding out what motivates you is tough BUT do it for yourself NOT ANYONE ELSE, EVER.  Most especially if it is a condition of a loved one or someone close to you.  Conditional love is not acceptable, you are a beautiful person to be loved, regardless of your size.  Those who love you before, during and after your weight loss are the ones you want to keep.
        • Don’t be discouraged that you are not losing the weight as fast as would like.  A half-pound is a half-pound, maybe it’s time to re-evaluate your diet or tweak your work-out.  If you keep the same work-out your body gets used to it and you will fail to lose as much weight as you were.  Invest in a personal training session or two and have them mix-up your work out.
        • See a Registered Dietician.  They give great visuals and real-life experience on what “one” serving looks like, better choices and mine was an awesome motivator – she was really psyched because I went there on my own and not because my Dr. told me to.  Most people she said resent her because they are “forced” to see her per Dr.’s orders. So, don’t let your weight get so far your Dr. is “ordering” you to lose weight.
        • Think about being around longer for your loved ones and lower premiums on life insurance.  Seriously, carting around ten less pounds driving around in your car has to increase fuel efficiency.

Some non-gym exercises to integrate into your daily life:

        • Vow to get that bike out and pedal around the park
        • Put up that basketball hoop sitting in the garage and inflate that ball
        • Take up soccer
        • Join a softball team
        • Go bowling
        • Go hiking
        • Walk around your neighborhood and see what’s new
        • Take your dog for walks
        • Take your kids to the park & swing with them (or kick around the soccer ball, throw a frisbee etc.)
        • Wash/detail/wax your car

Do you have any hints or susstions for high protein & low fat snacks?

How do you conquer the cravings?

Well this is seriously long (a novel to be sure) so I’ll stop here.  I hope this all helps you stay/get motivated!

Thanks so much scarlet!! I was doing so well, and I fell off the wagon straight into a huge pit of chocolate and I have been eating my way out. Seriously, though, I did fall off the wagon, and gained back the weight I lost.

your post comes at a perfect time.

Oh no that’s a bummer BB!! Just chalk that up to a lesson learned. I still have chocolate, just really force yoruself to stop at one piece. I have a Godiva (YUM!) chocolate and it is only 70 calories. That with a cup of chamomile tea and taking tiny bites, curbs my urge along with sugar free chocolate pudding. Oh and FYI Swiss Miss makes this great diet cocoa that is only 25 calories, add a few marshmallows, which oddly enough have more calories and you can feel spoiled rotten. Also what I find that helps is to distract yourself from taking your thoughts to food. Get outside and walk or jog, clean the house, scrub the bathroom etc. “busywork” often helps curb your mind from thinking about food such as when you are sedentary. I know that often if I am sedentary for too long, I get bored so I knit while I sit.

I keep meaning to take advantage of my free access to my college’s work-out facilities, but just can’t find the motivation. Maybe now that the weather is warmer, I can talk myself into driving over there.
I like the 100 calorie popcorn bags as snacks. It fills me up better than those other 100 calorie bags because there is so much more in it.

I hear ya those are great! The right motivation can be hard to find sometimes, but it’s a commitment you make to yourself to be and stay healthy. If you are a student, it will also help the stress too.

I’ve just started Turbo Jam in effort to shed a few extra pounds.  I’m determined to stick with it, so I hope it works like it seems to have worked for lots of other people.

I lost eight pounds just doing some basic workout moves in the washroom at work (You know your busy when you do squats on your pee break at work LOL)
I picked up some diet pills (???) in Arizona-we can’t get good ones in Canada and they are supposed to speed up your metabolism (And don’t interact with anything I’m on right now) so hopefully will have more to report soon!!!

Scarlet-and anyone looking to add more protein-do the veggie! You don’t have to be vegetarian (or inclined to do so) to buy veggies stuff-you can get hot dogs, burgers, cordon bleu, bologne, turkey, chicken breast etc etc etc and if your trying to add protein alone-it’s fantastic huge amounts of protein with almost no fat (generally less then one gram) and very small amounts of calories-and also vitamin fortefied too!
AND honestly I know most people are frigthened of tofu foods-don’t be. When I first went veggie they WERE disgusting and now so many people are-it’s a real market and the products are amazing-the consistancy is different of course-as they aren’t greasy -but the taste is amazingly similar to meat-in some cases I’ve had meat eaters reading the ingredients and still swearing that their is no way ‘that’s not meat’ Give it go!

Kokaneeandkahlua that’s a great idea…i am totally gonna start doing squats in bathroom during my breaks!

i am getting back on the wagon yet again..but i am lucky to have a couple of friends who have similar fitness goals to me (basically we want to be superfit..but right now we’re lazybutts).

anyway my personal trainer told me when i first started seeing her, that my chocolate cravings are a due to magnesium deficiency, not sure if that is true but i started taking multivitamins since then (with extra magnesium) and i no longer feel like chocolate..ever! it may just be a mental thing..but it seems to be working so that’s fine by me! hehe i’m now trying to work on controlling portion sizes.

after an 8 month couch stint i am back strong into `weight loss mode` right now! lol.

the last 2 weeks i have been building up my walking with the dog and this week is walkérun week. i will join my run group again after another walkérun week of conditioning since i can`t bear to join without getting some muscles awakened a little. its a fun group and its free! they meet 2x per week and you can pick if you`re running a long or a short route.

my long goal is to run in – and complete – the oktoberfest 10k… woo hoo! i entered in it a couple of years ago but didnt finish. i blew out a hamstring & limped back without completing the last 3k. bummer. so this time i`m going to join a clinic late summer to be sure i`m ready.

i`m a verrry verrry slllooowww runner but for some whacky reason i love it. no matter how often i divert to my couching ways i seem to get back to running.

anyhoo… since i`m realy tight for money right now i joined up a free online support group for weight loss é fitness goals called peertrainer. i`m only on week 2 there but i like it so far. basically you log in daily and post your food and exercise. but the cool thing is you can join groups & teams – as many as you want – of others online and you can see their logs and post encouragement & share tips `n stuff. you can also make your own group or team. if anyone else is interested in joining let me know! we can start a binky bunny weight loss team

hey , i saw this and decided to take a look but i here that you all seem to be chocoholics but the truth is that dark chocolate actually has lots of antioxodints in it which is very good for you so its not like you cant have chocolate just have it in moderation everyday to satisfy your sweet tooth so you dont deprive yourself, thats actually why people fall off their diet is because they deprive themselves of anything they like, like chocolate, so instead of giving in and having the entire chocolate bar just have a 1/4 or a 1/2 so your not over indulging. just thought id throw that out their (my moms a nutritionist). but way to go with your weight loss and good luck with your goals

Thanks for chipping in jake! It’s appreciated! You are right that deprivation really makes you fall of the wagon and binge on calories. That’s pretty cool that your mom is a nutritionist!

no problem also it says your looking for a good source of protein. chick peas, they are low in fat, only .5 grams a serving and have 10 grams of protein per serving so if you make hummus(or how ever you spell it) with some chick peas, garlic, lemon juice and olive oil and you put them in a food processer to make like a creamy paste its a very healthy and nutritious dip for crackers if you like to eat crackers. or just add them in a salad or eat them on your own also because my mom is a nutritionist if you need any info on stuff i go on here at least once every 2 days so just shout out to me and ill help. also if your looking to trim your waste, to add to your workout , hulla hooping. lol invest in a 5 dollar hoola hoop and just hulla hoop while your watching tv its actually a good work out instead off sittig on your butt.its really good for balance and your core(abs, back, butt, thighs)

hula hooping – now there’s an idea!

I also have prevented complete deprivation by getting a dark dark chocolate bar (I won’t eat too much of it that way), and then I use a veggie peeler to scrape off thin little itty bits and sprinkle them over bananas & strawberries, add a little bit of fat free whip cream with some grape nuts sprinkled on (for some crunch). It’s a great dessert without packing on the fat and calories.

I am so glad that Scarlet is doing these Weightloss Support threads because it does help remind me and nudge me when things are going downhill

I am sooo sick of being overweight, and this last “fall of the wagon” was very disappointing because I was finally really doing it and got the sugar cravings beat, but then I found out that when I allow myself to cheat even once, my body and mind begins craving the bad stuff like a drug! I never had to struggle with this much – been thin most of my life(until just a few years ago) regardless of what I ate, well I am paying for it now cuz wow – I puffed out as fast as a threatened puffer fish. Gained 50 – 60 pounds in these last few years.. And I gained weight equally all over and I feel like my organs are squished, my neck is squished. It’s not comfortable at all. I don’t even recognize myself – all lost in this external puffball!

So after the doc’s appt awhile back to make sure it wasn’t a hormone or thyroid thing, it came back that it’s just a me thing – me having to get used to the reality that I can no longer live my life like I did even five years ago. I now have to really watch what I eat, exercise and etc to get back on track. That’s the way it is and I just have to get deal with it.

So that’s that! hmpf. I’m in a real grumpy puffer fish mood about my last fall of the wagon, but I am using that emotion and energy for exercise and to steer myself away from the bad stuff!

ya also hoola hooping burns 100 calories every 10 minutes so if you do it for your 30 min tv show. that would really great for your weight loss and because your working your core that makes your burn more fat at your waste.

I like the idea. My husband will think I’m nuts and I know I won’t be doing it during a show that we will both be watching – that would be annoying for him…but then again (evil snicker) I can always knock him out with my swirling hoola if he gets too trigger happy with the remote! HAHA!

But I have a couple of just MY shows – hmmmm I don’t mind looking silly – I’d rather be thin and silly. Now – where to find a hoop!

Jake those are some awesome tips – the hula hoop too- and I will have to remember the chick peas! I love hummus but all the oil that usually goes into it turns me off because of the calories. I just need to make some of my own.

So…I went to the local carnival over the weekend and I saw two types of people. Thin, toned people and fat, jiggly people. I was not one of the people in the first category. I snarfed down funnel cake, two days in a row. I don’t do anything that could even remotely be considered exercise by any stretch of the imagination. I’m always tired, and on top of that? I’ve been seeing this smokin hot guy (really, your eyeballs could melt if you look at him for too long) for about five months and he has never, ever mentioned my weight. And he takes me out. In public. And people look at us and then do a double take and I know its for one of two reason…because he’s THAT hot and deserves a second glance OR they wonder what the hell he’s doing with me. And I can’t blame them because I wonder the same thing.

Side note: He’s told me the reason he likes going out with me (we aren’t exclusive but I’m not seeing anyone else and he’s pretty much always available so….) is because I’m easy to be with, I’m funny, I’m fun, and I’m not hung up on superficial bullcrap. And, except for the fact that I’m horribly self conscious (duh) I’m the most centered person he’s ever met. (Yeah, I know, whatever…lol)

Aaaaaanyway, I’m sick of it. I’m ‘sick and tired of not liking what I see when I look in the mirror…and dude, I walk past a lot of mirrors on any given day. I notice not because I”m seeking them out…but because I’m avoiding them.

So I bit the bullet. I joined the gym in my work building. It’s cheap and pretty close to empty during my lunch hour, which is from 1-2. I’ve been watching what I eat but all that’s done is maintain the weight I have. I guess that’s better than packing on more but it’s not good enough.

I have to do this on my lunch hour. I can’t leave early in the morning because the girls have to get to school. I can’t do it in the evening because I’ve been meaning to for months and I just haven’t made it happen. I usually sit at my desk and read during my lunch hour. It won’t kill me to go to the gym instead.

Now I just have to decide how to go about this. I’m thinking start with cardio, get my endurance up, and then work on strength? That seems the most logical to me but what do I know? I’m the one who’s been putting off joining the work gym until I’ve been there for more than a year!

First day at the gym. I got sweaty. It was gross. I learned a couple of things.

                                            1. Bo and Hope are still on Days of Our Lives and they still look like they’re in their 20’s. I got to watch this while I was on the stationary bike.

                                            2. I can break a sweat. When I belonged to Curves I never got sweaty because the clientele at my location was mostly old, fat ladies so they keep the air turned down to 60. You had to work hard just to feel comfortable in there.

                                            3. Skinny chix I saw today who used to be fat chix look pretty skerry when they’re naked. They also are not at all inhibited. I changed in the locker room and wondered if I should even bother losing weight if I’m still gonna look gross. Skinny chix who used to be really, really fat chix and now look smokin hot in clothes should befriend a good plastic surgeon so she’ll look equally hot when she’s out of them.

I can guzzle 16.9 oz. of water in less than 30 seconds.

I’m stuck going to lunch with my boss tomorrow but I’ll hit the gym again on Thursday and let you guys know how it goes.

I had a friend in college who used to be really fat and lost a ton of weight. She could grab a piece of her skin and stretch it out like six inches. It was cah-razy!

Lizzie, was it loose or was it elastic? The best way I can describe what this looks like is to compare it to my stomach right after I had my kids, when everything was real squishy and wrinkly and I looked like a stuffed animal who was missing a big old wad of stuffing. Except what I saw today was about 10 times worse than that.

Don’t get me wrong, these women have accomplished something amazing…I just know if I ever get to that point I’ll be sorely disappointed.

Well… it definitely snapped right back when she let go.  It just looked super loose.

Anyway, it’s not like you’ll be running around naked all the time.

                                                  Or will you……..?!

That’s so gross =p This is why I want to get rid of my stomach fat now before it loses its elasticity. When I was little I was chubby but I lost the baby fat late high school just sitting around doing nothing.

So right now I’m 136 lbs and 5’6-5’7. I’m sure you’re all like “are you kidding? That’s skinny what are you doing trying to loose weight?” And you’re right, that weight for that height would be quite lovely on most people, but I have a small frame. I’m 21 and as I age I’ll inevitably get worse looking so I’d rather be as happy as possible with myself now, you know? As a result of my frame, my stomach looks really fat. I want it too look nice when it’s out in a bikini (the drop off at my pant line isn’t noticeable as long as I keep good posture so in tighter shirts I’m okay as long as they’re not really tight), but gosh darnit I want to look lovely in a bikini! And I want to be able to lay on my side and cuddle with my bf without being concerned that all my stomach fat has moved to one side and become very grabbable.

The thing is, last summer I went to the gym an average of 4 days a week, doing about 2 miles on the elliptical and then weights to tone problem areas, and I ate healthy foods and even took alli when I was having something with some fat in it that wasn’t healthy fat like fish or avocado. That helped, I think, because fat has more calories than anything else so by stopping that absorption I still got plenty of nutrient but not the bad stuff.
By the end of the summer I was exhausted! My stomach was flatter (but still flabby… hmph my mom had a flat stomach in college) and I weighed 125. But 125 is still a little too much for my frame, and there was no way I could keep that up with school and studying and college meal plans and ice cream.

So now I’m frustrated! Having graduated my school gym membership is expired and I hate jogging, especially outside where everyone can see me. And I freaking LOVE ice cream. Really I do. I purposely got a dorm fridge with a separate freezer for my Ben and Jerry’s. I guess I’ll have to switch to frogurt. OH know what’s good though? DELICIOUS actually? Toffutti Fudge bars! They have 2.5% your daily value of fat in them I think. Maybe even less.

                                                        About the hula thing:
It’s super good exercise. I can’t do real hula (I always drop the stupid hoop!) but when I do wii fit hula I’m tired by the time I’m finished and am occasionally achy the next day.

                                                            Hints and tricks:

Use http://www.caloriesperhour.com. It’s super helpful. It’ll tell you how many calories you need to sustain yourself and it’ll tell you how many calories each activity you do burns (including copying papers at the office or standing up and eating lunch at the same time…) Makes it very easily to calculate what you need to do to lose 1 lb/3500 calories.

Eat rice! It’s got a fair amount of calories but it keeps you nice and full.

Stir fry. 2 servings, half calories and recipe for one serving. Substitute light soy sauce and only egg whites, or add more eggs or veggies or tuna or tofu or whatever… don’t use oil, you won’t need it. After boiling rice, let sit for at least an hour so your stir fry isn’t stirfry flavored ricemush. Use large pan to help prevent this as well. Put in veggies to cook for a while before adding rice… add soy sauce last or else shrooms will absorb it:

Get rid of cable at your house. Half the reason I stayed on the ellipticals so long last summer was my mom cancelled cable and so the only tv entertainment I got was while I was at the gym. Makes you stay longer, even if you just walk because you’re tired out. Is also nice and distracting from exercise =) OR! Buy an elliptical. It’s much gentler than a treadmill, and the expense and space taken up in your living room will guilt you into using it.

I think you can get a replacement for about 20 bucks at most electronic/everything stores. You’re lucky Remy didn’t eat the rest of your tv while at it. Have you looked at wii active? I want it but it’s like 60 bucks.

I went to the gym again yesterday. I did 20 minutes on the elliptical with a 3 minute water break at the 10 minute mark. I probably wouldn’t have taken that long but I had to buy a water which required going in the locker room to retrieve $1.10 to put in the machine.

And get this. I totally got hit on. By a guy who used to be my neighbor. He walked in about 5 minutes before I left and said “Hey! I haven’t seen you here before!” and hopped on the machine next to mine. We chatted for a while and I learned that he is separated from his wife. I knew I hadn’t seen him around in a while but I don’t usually go out after work so that’s not unusual.

Anyway, about an hour after I got back to my desk I got an email saying it was nice to run into me. I shot him one back saying that maybe I’d see him there again some time and THEN he started IMing me on the inter office IM! These things just don’t happen to me.

So, good news is I now have a work out buddy. Bad news is I have to figure out how to tell him to knock off the flirty stuff without hurting his feelings. Don’t get me wrong, I’d totally date him if he was divorced but I’ve gone down the “separated” road before and I’m not doing it again.

Anyway, 20 minutes on the elliptical winded me pretty good and my knees felt like jelly when I was done. I wonder how long it’ll take before I don’t need the water break…

So, today’s work out was by myself, workout buddy takes Friday’s off.  Here’s what I did:

                                                                              15 minutes on the bike-5.38 miles-91 calories
                                                                              15 minutes on the elliptical-1.28 miles-211 calories

the elliptical kept yelling at me to slow down because my heart rate was too high.  it kept hovering between 157 and 160.  It was happier with it being more like 154.  Heart rate was in the high 140s on the bike and it called that my target rate.  since I’m a novice at this how does this look?  and more importantly, what do I need to improve?
