I saw this on craigslist. I know that iceberg lettuce is bad for bunnies, but not all lettuce! Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Bunnies love lettuce and it seems like it's good for them, but it's not. For domestic rabbits lettuce is really bad. It messes up their digestive system and eventually kills it. If you gave your bunny lettuce you might will want to give it an unlimited amount of hay for the rest of its life because hay is great for their digestive system. So pleasedont feed your bunny lettuce.

romaine, red leaf and green leaf are fine for bunnies. I have heard this "no lettuce" thing before, I do not know where it comes from. Maybe because iceberg is mostly water and has little nutrition, I do not know. |

well my bunnies are not too fond of iceburg anyways. i guess its how it tastes to them. my mother gave them some that she was going to toss.... =/ gave her a good yelling for doing that while i was away. >o< but as for redleaf, my bunnies seem to like that with a hint of mint on the side. this week, they get mint, cilantro and rosemary. =) |

That post is very vague on that web site, and does not give enough information. It does not list the type of lettuce nor the reason for their stating that it is really bad and to please not feed it to your bunny. Personally, I dismiss it unless it is backed up with fact and reputable veterinary reports. The lettuces listed previously (red, romaine and green leafy lettuce) are just fine and contain vitamin A, all except iceberg which has no nutrional value for a bunny. I am wondering if this person ever gave the bunny hay at all and just fed a rabbit lettuce only, if that is the case, then yes, it would be a problem. I wish that they had come to a web site like BinkyBunny or gone to a rabbit organization web site to learn more before posting info that simply is not completely correct. Who knows though, it is hard to say what their age is too. |

Hrmmm, that doesn't sound right. I know iceberg lettuce is bad for bunnies (and, since it is the most common kind, this might be what they are referring to since they don't specify) but other types of lettuce, like everybody else has already mentioned, is fine for bunnies. I think a bunch of bunny nuts like us would notice some negative signs if the lettuce were truly BAD for them, don't you?  Anyways, this person has no proof or support for their facts so I don't see a reason why you should take their post seriously. It's much easier to trust qualified vets and dietricians instead. |

it makes you wonder where people get such half-truth info and then feel the need to spread it further!
no iceberg isn't good - but the darker lettuces are just fine.

I agree with you gravehearted! I just don't understand it either. All of us have been feeding our furry babies the darker lettuces forever and none of us have had any trouble. I'm going to respond to this person and tell them that they are wrong! Why people feel the need to perpetuate incorrect information is beyond me! |

Well, like I mentioned earlier, we do not know the whole situtaion that led to that post and there could be very important details missing that would make us understand this post better. I really hope that the person who posted that finds a bunny-savvy place to go to in order to better educate themselves about rabbits.
I'm glad you are posting to this person, be kind, perhaps refer them to a list of bunny safe veggies and diet and a bunny organization web site.  |

Oh absolutely, I'll be kind. It could be that this person just doesn't know enough about rabbits, or maybe they heard it from another source that didn't have all the facts. I will tell them about this website and how much it has helped all of us! |
