ok so i use feline pine for my buns is that ok? but the prices have gone up so i went looking around and at my feed store where i get my bun food they have bedding called equine pine and it  looks, feels, and reacts the exactly the same as feline pine but its 40lbs for $6 instead of 10lbs for $9 would the equine pine be ok to use as the buns litter?

I use equine pine and I really like it. I’ve used feline pine before and like it as well but it was really just too expensive with the amount that I use. I go through about 1/2-3/4 of a 40lb bag of equine pine in just 1 week, but that is with ferrets and rabbits (10 litterboxes). I buy a couple bags at a time especially if the store I get it at is doing a sell. I like the equine pine better the feline pine because the feline pine has more a pine woody smell to it. The equine pine does have a woody smell but not very strong, but is REALLY great on controlling the urine and feces smell. I also use to use yesterday’s news but in my opinion it didn’t absorb the urine near as well or as quickly and didn’t keep the litterbox smells down ( for my ferrets). Ferrets urine is VERY stinky, more than rabbits and of the litters I’ve tried so far the equine pine has absorbed and controlled the odor the best plus it really cheap. Again this just my opinion. Now for one of my rabbit I do mix equine pine and yesterday’s news together because she hair long hair and likes to sleep and dig in her litterbox. For the rest I use one the equine pine and am very happy with it.

i never thought of using it for ferrets. i have 5 and their whole bottom of the cage is litter boxes in every cornor. i’ll try it next time i clean lol which is tomorrow. do you clean your ferret boxes everyday? and can this pine stuff be filtered or do you just have to dump it all out every time?

I have 6 ferrets in 2 different cages. I have 2, 3-4 yr old ferrets in one cage with one litterbox in the very bottom of it. Than I have 4 young ferrets under 1 yr old in another cage with 2 litterboxes, one on the top level and one on the bottom slide drawer. I have the marshall penthouse cages and arranged the shelves to have 3 levels plus the bottom slide out drawer. With the younger ferrets I usually scoop out their litterboxes at least every 2 days sometimes everyday, but they are very active and eat way more than my 2 older ones. It just depends on how much is their litterboxes. With the younger ferret I usually just dump their all the litter every time because most of the litter is used. I only put about 2 inch deep in their litterboxes. With the older ferrets I just scoop where its needed but I usually dump the whole thing at least once a week, sometimes twice a week. I don’t use the corner litterboxes because 2 of my ferret are very large, over 3 lbs, and all of my ferrets will only use the litterboxes that they can have their whole body in. I use the the super pet hi bac litter boxes.

p.s. The ferret are housed in 2 different cages because the younger ferrets are too active and bother the older 2 when their housed together. They all get play time out together but are housed differently because the 2 older really like their sleep time and are pretty lazy except for play time. Plus it stress them out a little with I tried having in the all housed together.

well all of mine are about the same age and the younger ones seem to brighten up the older ones they are more alert and active now. the cage i have can actually be partially viewed in one of my posts about the rabbit cages i built,  on the bottom floor of the cage i put cornor boxes in 3 corners and put on large normal one at the bottom the ramp right on front of the door ( i scoop them out every day). names are bear, terra, pan, taz, loki wiggle wurm. here is a pic of them all together. and here is their placement in the pic…….bear is the darkest one, taz is the white one, terra is leaning over taz in the middle, pan is to the right of terra, and loki is at the bottom behind terra and pan.

They are so cute! I’d definitely recommend you give the Equine a try. It’s amazing how much money you can save. I use woodstove pellets and I think they have better odor control than the paper based litter I was using previously, and it’s 20 bucks cheaper for 40 pounds.

well then equine pine it is. i am still unsure about using it for ferrets though i just scoop out their box as it is now i dont really want to have to dump it out everyday like i do the rabbits boxs. but maybe i will try it first and see how it works out for me.

I find that they are both pretty much the same thing in different packaging.  I can’t find a difference besides the price.  This is the best litter I have ever used!

i was wondering on the bunny side of htings what size litter box i should use in my large cages with the multiple bunnies because all i have are small ones right now and my largest bun (food) makes that box so dirty in one day, so i was thinking that well if she were in the cage with the other two i want with her that are also pretty large then that box wont cut it at all…..well i was thinking about using a cage bottom as a litter box one of the medium to smaller ones then they would all have room to do whatever they need to do and such. think that would work? it would be big enough for them all to sit  in it [just chill together, eat some hay together, dig, and hold all that pee lol] i mean food pees alot and i can only imagine what all three of them could do lol.

With multiple rabbits, some people use the shallow  “under-the bed” storage containers.  They are about the size of two large cat litterboxes side by side.

Obviously, you would not have the lid on.  A regular size one can cost anywhere from about 5-10 bucks and you can get them at discount stores (Wal-mart, Target, K-Mart).

Another option is to just place two large rectangle cat litterboxes side by side.  That’s how I have my buns set-up.  Since the boxes are individually smaller, they are easier to dump and clean, but offer the same overall area.  I use one box as their hay eating area.  It keeps most of the mess confined.
