I just got this from Auntie Heather, who has been monitoring the PetSmart rabbit sale issue:

PetSmart is discontinuing  rabbit sales at their stores and  will no longer be selling rabbits in any of their stores once the remaining rabbits are gone.

What a a wonderful Holiday gift for the rabbits and all our rescue community members who worked so hard at responding to the problem.    This is great news for all the  communities that had PetSmart rabbits too.  It was such a shock to see rabbits for sale at PetSmart!

We have learned that it was because of the strong  vocal opposition of animal lovers across the United States that they have reconsidered their choice and decided to stop.

I encourage you to take a minute and write to PetSmart to  thank them for their decision, and let them know that it was the right choice.

Please address your thanks to PetSmart care of:

Thank you for sharing…I’d been monitoring our petsmarts and never seen a rabbit in them yet, but I knew they were considering selling them!!

thats great news!  i wish petcetera here in canada would follow suit.  their website says:

"Due to the lack of knowledge and misunderstanding of keeping exotic animals as pets, Petcetera does not support the sale of these animals." says Dan Urbani, Founder, President & CEO of Petcetera.

they also work with the humane society for cat & dog adoptions.  yet the one by my place sells rabbits and other small critters.  i don’t get it.

              That is fabulous news!

For the folks who live in the bay area…. Theres a pet shop in San Jose called Andy’s Pet Shop

and I heard from a friend who owns a restaurant nearby that area that they are going to be under

new management (again) but this time the new owners WILL NOT be selling purebreed pups

anymore. Those poor pups stayed in tiny kennels! My friend informed me that the animals which

will be at the store will be animals that are available for adoption! (I hope that goes for small animals too!

I am excited to see the transformation!

Yay!!!! That’s so exciting!!! I’m going to send them a nice Christmas card to thank them – its great that they considered the feelings of other people (OK, perhaps there is a slight doubt in my mind that this was related to the outcry and not because the bunnies weren’t selling….) Anyways, I’m so happy!

were they selling the altered animals or was that petco?  if they were, could’ve been the price… i think they were selling them for like 100 dollars or something.  most people don’t want to make an impulsive 100 dollar purchase for an animal they know nothing about.  and once they find out more info, they realize the 100 bucks is a tiny amount in comparison to what they will need to spend over the next decade or so.

I’m pretty sure petco was selling young rabbits that were not spayed or neutered.
