I volunteer and foster for my local Humane Society. They do not spay or neuter their rabbits, so I foster them all until I can take them to better shelters.

This is becomming financially and emotionally difficult for me.

I need your suggestions and ideas as to how I can go about helping the Humane Society obtain funds for their rabbits to have all of them spayed and neutered.  I don't know the in's and out's of running a shelter, so I was hoping that those that do could give me some ideas. What I am looking for is something more than fundraisers; while I could use some fundraising ideas, I was wondering if there is a group, grant, subsidy, or something along those lines.

Aside from some small fundraising ideas, the only idea I can come up with is to ask local vets for help (this Humane Society does not have it's own vet on premesis).

I don't know the ins and outs, but perhaps the Humane Society could hold a monthly nail trimming and grooming for a set price? That may help with the cost of spaying and neutering.

Laura, you live in Washington, correct? So do I.

The Oregon Humane Society was recently able to build a medical facility on site, paid for by donations which got through.. you guessed it, fundraisers. There really isn't any other way to obtain funds, as you need to get the word out to people. Asking vets to donate time to spay and neuter is a good idea, the rabbit advocates get vet time donated for the buns here. Perhaps you could contact someone at the OHS, and talk to them about how to raise awareness and such for your humane society. I know that OHS does work closely with other rescues and humane socities, so it wouldn't hurt to call them or send off an email. http://www.oregonhumane.org/

Oxbow has a rescue grant program - the applications are due in the summer, maybe July.  The 2011 grant form hasn't been released, but I'm guessing it will likely be very similar to the 2010, which is posted.  http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/ox...ue_support

I have had a lot of success with vegan bakesales as fundraisers!  You can raise a few hundred dollars in a day.

How much should we charge for nail cutting & grooming? Grooming being brushing only?

At the RA outreaches I do, it's by donation, but its typically $5-10 per rabbit for nail trims and brushing.

That's sad that they don't spay or neuter. Up here in Whatcom county (hi btw lol) they do...good to know, they're on my list to call today in my quest for the right bun. Good luck figuring out how to raise the funds, that's awesome that you help them out with fostering etc!!

I know. Most all shelters in Whatcom, Skagit and King Counties spay/neuter all animals. At least Skagit doesn't tell me no they won't, they just say they don't have the money. So I will do a fundraiser and try to help.

I don't know if you can utilise this if your not the pet owner but your state is one I found that has a low cost neuter program that actually covers rabbits. Typically they only do cats and dogs. I came across that when searching programs for a member in another state.
I'll try find the organisation again. You might already be aware of it?

Edit to add: I *think* this was the one I had seen before. www.paws.org/spay-neuter.html  You may need to be a resident of the relevant counties to access these programs though.  Seattle Humane Society has a program also and covers King county. From what I can see that one have done rabbit neuters before and may again in future.   Even if you can't benefit from these programs, perhaps the people who operate them can give advice on how you could go about organising cheaper neuters?
