I was on craigslist today and found a lady who had posted… " free bunny someone please take!"

So of course that was a red alarm and worried me. I emailed asking and she said it didn’t belong to her but a friend who got it for her children a year ago and now they no longer want it. I gave this lady my phone # and asked her to have her friend call me. It just makes me sick to think that people get into this mind frame and then just dislike their pets anymore.

My husband isn’t home but I am gonna talk with him when he gets back about the rabbit. We have no idea what sex it is because it has never been to the vet. We plan on getting my buns husbunnies but this might put a snag in our plans. I will worry myself sick over this rabbit if we don’t do something for it.

We have no shelters in my area. The closest to me is in Columbus which we are going this weekend to play with their buns. I guess I could see if they could take it if my husband wont let us keep it…

I have already told my husband that I want to have a little rabbit rescue one day. I guess there is no better day to start than now! lol But, I live in the city and we don’t have room in our house for endless rabbits. lol

Aw Heidi, I know how hard it is to know that there is an unloved bunny out there that needs your help.  Good luck with this, just please, don’t get in over your head.

that is very nice of you to want to take it in. but like osprey said, please dont over exert yourself. if anything i know that there has got to be a good and loving home out their for the bun if you dont take him/her in. dont worry, it sickens me too. but i guess people just dont quite understand the meaning of PET. isnt a pet an animal you bring into your life to become a part of your family, not an object like a toy that is lifeless and can be thrown out. even my toys i had when i was a child i didnt throw out. i passed them all on. everything!

Hi! Maybe you can "foster" him to give him some adequate care while finding him a home?  I do not have a lot of room for bunnies in my house either, so I enjoy "fostering" because I can do just one bunny at a time, but still really feel like I am helping. It is also easier to get a bunny adopted when you can really explain to someone the personality of the bunny, so if it stays in your house for a bit, you can get some cute pics as well as a good idea of what kind of personality the bun has.  Also, with fostering, its easier to limit yourself, because you can say, I will only have ONE foster bunny, and you know that you are doign the most you can, so you won’t be tempted to get more and more until you get the one adopted, then you can help a second.

If you DO decide to foster, I can send you some adoption contract formats that you can use for potential adopters!

I am going this wkend to work at a bunny shelter an hour north of my home. That is the only bunny shelter around. The humane society takes in rabbits every now and then.

I think i could try fostering but I am afraid I would get so attached that I couldn’t let the rabbit go if someone wanted it.

I Just called our local humane society. She said they have a 2-3wk wait on taking in rabbits because they got 5 easter buns and a mom and 3 babies so they would have no place to put this bun. I told them we are willing to foster it if we decide we don’t want to keep it.

I asked her if i could bring in some toys and she told me that I could whenever I wanted because the rabbits rarely get any attention or treats. She said they have one guy they call the rabbit guy who comes in and plays with them and gives them treats but thats all they have.

                  So sad. Breaks my heart.

awww thats so V sad!! stupid peeps buying Easter buns.  For goodness sakes, easter was like a WEEK ago! how can people dump them already???

anyways, I am attaching a little flyer I made up around christmas time that i made to do a "Toy Drive" for the bunnies at the shelters I work with:

It was actually a pretty big success, especially once people realized they didn’t have to spend any money! I can send you the original file by email if you’re interested, since you’d have to change the Christmas theme!

Actually MooBunny it DID come up! Thank you so much!

You are right, most people don’t realize buns will play with things they already have in their homes. I am going tomorrow to take the buns at our shelter food, treats  and toys and spend some time with them. I told my husband I will go a few times a week from now on since I know they do have buns and they are lonely.

I can’t believe there are easter buns already either. The bun I am taking in was an easter bun. I really wish these pet stores would stop selling these poor bunnies!

It is amazing, isn’t it?  We took in a bunny on Easter morning, people showed up at the shelter with this little bun with a broken leg, the shelter cannot properly deal with the leg, so we took him and have payed for his surgeries.  He was likely dropped or stepped on, on Easter morning.

I read an article last week about how "live rabbit" sales are way down this year, so maybe the message is finally getting out.

You know, you would think that people who love and enjoy pets are the ones owning these stores and it seems that when you show them the proof that these animals end up in shelters or dead outside that they would care enough to do something about it.

I am so impressed areas in CA have been able to do something about it but I guess Ohio is way behind on this issue.
