Haven’t seen those yet. I can’t get over the feeling of the new 50s and 100s. It feels wrong. Like it’s not real money. Us crazy Canadians. First we have colourful, Monopoly money and then we go and make it slippery and see-through.

the 20’s are coming this year. and the 10’s and 5’s are coming out next year! then it’ll take probably… my guess… a decade for all the old stuff to be weeded out.

Okay I need an educational lesson. Why is Queen Elizabeth on your money?

probably so it can be easily washed after it’s used for tips in certain las vegas establishments…

@Frankie – the Queen is on the money because she’s technically still the head of the country. We’re a commonwealth country – we’re separate from Britain, but at the same time we’re not.
                        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government_of_Canada#Monarchy
“Canada is a constitutional monarchy, wherein the role of the reigning sovereign is both legal and practical, but not political.”

Australia has had bills very similar to our new ones for quite some time, I remember thinking they were very cool when visting there.

Annette is right, we have plastic money too and the $1 and $2 are now gold coin… We are also part of the Commonwealth our political leader is the Prime Minister, currently Julia Gillard (which is driving the mysogonistic ratbags in opposition absolutely crazy) and the Queen is our sovereign who is represented by a Governor General, Quentin Bryce (also a woman)

It’s really similar to New Zealand notes as well. I live in the UK and when I go to visit my dad I always find the money so cool. You can’t rip it or get it wet!!!

BrittandYeti- I like our money too. When I go to the US it takes me forever to pay for stuff because I’m all confused. It all looks the same.

lol, Mike. That’s probably why. I heard that the bills aren’t holding up as well as they planned. Too many washes, I guess.

Does anyone know the date the penny goes bye bye? I’ve already rolled up all mine and cashed them in. Won’t miss those little coppers but it will suck having everything rounded up to 5 cents.

LPT – Or round DOWN, although knowing retailers that’s not how the pricing is going to work out. But if your purchase is say $10.02 and you’re paying by cash then you pay $10. If it’s $10.03 and you’re paying by cash then you pay $10.05. Makes me glad I charge most things, at least until retailers are allowed to start adding on service fees for plastic.

Roberta – we have a $1 “gold” coin, and a two-tone $2 coin. The $1 has a bird called a loon on it so it’s usually referred to a loonie. When the $2 coin came out, even though it has a polar bear on it, people started calling it a toonie. It’s got a smaller gold-tone central disc surrounded by a silver-tone ring.

I keep thinkingin that the next logical step is to have a separate ring, maybe copper-tone, worth $3. You could spend it on it’s own, or snap it onto the oustide of the toonie to make $5. I’m sure it’ll never happen, but I like the idea.

At first I was weirded out by the toonie but I think they are pretty.

I love the quarters that you get once in a while with colour in them:

My Mom saves all the neat quarters. I’d rather use them to buy coffee.

LPT: the last penny was was produced quite a few months ago. im not too sure when they will be completely out. but i know the company i work for has already changed prices so the taxes will not involve a penny just nickles.

The rounding up sucks, everything is set so they get those few cents gratis….BUT if you use a card be it debit, credit or access they have to input the exact amount rather than scamming the cents off the total.Imagine it every store every day has several thousand people that spend an amount that leaves cents for rounding, doesn’t take long to make money for jam.

Oh wow. You know one thing about the U.S. I dislike is that in school, you only learn history one way. I never knew any of that about Australia or Canada. Partly because I don’t follow politics, the news, or have taken any international business or history classes… yet.
