I have tried every kind of pet bed, towel, blanket I could get my hands on, and most were just not big/washable/slip proof enough. So 2 weeks ago I saw a giant bathmat that supposedly has "gel" inside at Costco, and decided to give it a shot. It covers almost half the cage and my bunnies LOOOOOVE it. They snuggle on it all day. It doesn't move around or fold over or crumple up. It catches A LOT of hair, so much so that I vacuum about 1/4 of an inch of hair off it every day (better than it floating around my house!). But the greatest thing of all is that my mini rex with sore hocks has had a huge improvement in the look of her heels. They look amazing, no red marks, just regular pale skin.

I bought a dark brown one so stains won't show. I'm going to get 2 more to rotate out, should they discontinue them. I highly recommend these.

It's important, with any type of mat or fabric, that you keep a close eye on your bun to make sure he's not chewing and ingesting material. (This is meant for anyone else reading this, since you mentioned your bun is not a chewer).

Absolutely, I wouldn't give my fosters one of these, as one of them chews everything within reach. Also, I have to correct myself, it's memory foam and not "gel". Anyway, for people who aren't dealing with chewers, I would suggest trying this.

ooo I might try this! I've seen those mats around and never thought about them for the rabbits. My one bun doesn't get sore hocks very bad, but he's always teetering on the edge. I don't know if this is just him, or he is just prone to them after his old home because he gets lots of blankets and towels to lay on and is never on wire flooring now that he is with me.

My one rabbit likes to give everything new, one good bite and then leaves it alone. But if they decide to chew it, then I guess I'll just have a nice bathmat for myself

My mini rex came with bleeding hocks. She had been sitting in her own filth for days when we got her. Our vet said that rex rabbits are prone to sore hocks and that the hair won't grow back and we'll always have to keep an eye on it. At the time we had her living on layers and layers of towels and blankets to help them heal. Our house is mostly hardwood and throw rugs, both are hard on bare bunny hocks, so we make the cage as soft as possible, so that she is on soft surfaces most of the day. But towels, blankets and stuff get all bunched up within minutes of my laying them out, and it made me crazy. When they heal really well like they are right now we paint a layer of "New Skin" on once a week. That helps a lot too.

I have to add, I have been putting plastic canvas over the pellet litter we use and it really "smoothes" that out for her to sit on. I used to do a layer of carefresh, but they dig it up and then she has pokey pellets under her bare hocks, so I had to try something else.
