Right now my bun has a store bought cage, it’s pretty big and would be perfect for a dwarf, but she’s about seven pounds now and needs a bigger cage.. And I feel so bad. So any Ideas about expanding or new cages? She’ll be sharing her new cage with one or two other buns. So what can I do? Her cage measures : 32″ long 20″ wide, and 16″ tall. So you can imagine how small it is for her.

You could try building a cage out of NIC cubes or you could use an x-pen.

Its actually a falicy that smaller buns can go in small cages, they need more room because they are more active. NIC cubes are the best way to go, I have built 3 habitats for my buns that are pretty big and spent about $250 for all three.

I second an x-pen. Your current cage is too small for any bunny, most commercial cages are. An x-pen will give her plenty of room, although she will still need out of cage play time.

I know she needs a bigger cage. But an x-pen wouldn’t work. Because she’d escape in a matter of seconds.. And my bunnies always get hours of play a day. But I am thinking of doing an NIC. Any ideas bout that?

Under bunny info, at the top of this page, there is a page for habitats with links to building NIC homes. I also recommend YouTube, especially http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbt7G4252i0&feature=plcp this video, from of BudgetBunny.ca

Also, for the “cheap” factor. Chances are you aren’t going to be able to build the type of bunny home your bunny needs for little money. It’s going to require some money for the supplies, tools, and if you want to buy extra toys for the condo to make it extra fun for your bun. But it is an investment as they tend to last, if well built, and will improve your rabbits life. post pics when done, we love to see houses!

I think I will go with NIC. And when I say cheap I mean Cheaper than Store Brand cages (Those can be to expensive. ) How many boxes worth of storage cubes do you think will take to make a cage big enough for 2 buns?

What kinds of buns do you have? How big are they?

I got my bunny cage idea from http://budgetbunny.ca/2011/01/18/building-your-own-bunny-condo-a-step-by-step-how-to/ They also have a great video that shows how they made it. It was definitely a lot cheaper than buying a cage smaller or about the same size. I had done a bunch of research and found a company that sold cages roughly around the same size for $400! I’m a poor college student. There was no way I was paying that. So I bribed my boyfriend’s brother-in-law to help my boyfriend and I make the cage. In Budget Bunny’s video it said it took them about three days to make. It took me forever to zip tie the cubes together but we actually assembled it and cut the wood in a day.  Skipper’s cage is four cubes high and three cubes long with the sides being two cubes wide.  I ending up buying four boxes of cubes.

We spent about $100 on everything for our buns — we used 3 boxes of NIC cubes (from Target though so we had to buy more since there’s seem to have both small and big NIC cubes and we could only use the small since our buns can escape through the larger sized holes) which were all $20 apiece — then we bought a huge $30 piece of wood from Home Depot that they cut down for us instead all the sizes we needed (the piece of wood was a lot larger than we needed so I’m sure you could get a smaller piece) and then the dowels which were a couple dollars a piece and we bought a $15 piece of huge outdoor carpet that has worked awesome for our buns.  They love trying to tear the carpet in our house to pieces but they haven’t bothered this at all!

Here’s some pics — and we have 3 buns living in there right now!  There’s 3 different levels to get to and they’re constantly bouncing around their cage.  We give them a lot of out time also but don’t feel comfortable leaving them out alone all the time because they are little devils and I’ve caught them jumping up on the NIC cube fence we bought and attempting to climb over it.  Believe me, it’s a sight to behold.

This is an old thread from here — which is actually where I got all my ideas for our bunny condo! Hope it helps!

New here but I’d like to tell you what we did before for our daughters bunny. We took an old dresser of the kids and turned it on it’s side. Took an old tall bird cage and cut out the four wire sides. We then took out all the drawers and stapled the bird cage sides to the front of the dresser where the drawers would go. We made a little upper level for the rabbit to sit up on and a ramp. It turned out great! I will upload a pic of it into my album so you can see what it looked like. It was a fun project and the bunny loved it! We had a dog pen that we had around it so the bunny would have a nice sized play yard as well.

When you think about it, rabbit cages once you have it appropriately sized is a one-time investment. At least, that’s what I told myself after I spent around $110 dollars on creating a rabbit condo. It was totally worth it though, my rabbits are very happy and I am too since I know they’re in a comfortable space!

The best part about NIC cubes is that you can make a condo completely customizable to fit the space that you have in your room, and if you move, you can adjust it there too!
