I just got my Flemish Giant almost a month ago, she has grown a lot in that time. I have plans to move her from the large rabbit (Petsmart) cage she is in now to a C&C Cage. Im thinking 3×6 is a good size with a 2×3 loft on one side (Pet steps will be made, she doesn’t like ramps but loves her little loft she has now lol) with coroplast and fleece liners for comfort (thankfully she is littler box trained.) I was wondering if this is good and If I need to know anything else before I begin buying the supplies. Advice would be soooo helpful for a first time bunny mommy!  I appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Actualy I have a blue Flemish giant that is goign on 7 months old and he is a wopping 17 lbs!! and he shares his cage with his bonded bun Baby who is a mini lop. their cage was made out of the nic cube panels and plywood. the bottom panel is 4’x 5′ and they have plenty of room.

Ooo wow thanks for showing me your awesome cage, I like how yours is smaller then my idea yet still has room for both buns! Very nice!

Flemish Mommy: That sounds like a good idea. I like how big you want to make it. Some rabbits pee on fleece so you might want to consider vinyl flooring like bullrider has so their is more traction then plain coroplast! Just a thought though.

I really think a C&C is way too small for a full size Flemish Giant – they need ALOT of room and free roam would be best with a x-pen or 2 really as their home base.

All rabbits need to be able to stretch up fully and periscope.

I think Bullrider’s cage really is too small, in my opinion…there is no way a Flemish can totally stretch up on their hind legs. They also need to full stretch out. I could be wrong about Bullrider’s cage only because I cannot see the true size, but it really needs to be very spacious.

                Your rabbit is beautiful.

Yeah I do agree with sarita. But a 3×6 is is bigger then one xpen but you may want two xpens if you can’t have her out all day. Xpens are also cheaper then NIC grids. I think Flemishes should be free range, but its always good to have a home base for rabbits.

                    X-pens are 4 x 4.

I agree with Sarita on the size issue. My bunny is free range 97% of the day because it is summer and I just graduated so I won’t be going to college until the fall, Sophie will then be caged up depending on my future schedule. Mocha200 you made a good point about the 2 x-pens (I think the nic grids just look neater idk). Plus I was thinking fleece liners like the ones they use for Guinea Pigs (extra layers for pee) and I really like that if I make those I can make her cage a little more decretive!

This is what gave me the idea:

And this is kinda what I want just double grids up (found this online) and zip ties with the coroplast:

That looks like a great setup for her and it has a lot of space for her too. Can’t wait to see the final product!

You can use plain plastic flooring (chair mats, kids’ rugs, etc.) or carpet squares (ideally cotton or hemp based) instead of coroplast. Your might not even need special flooring if your NIC structure stands up on its own and your bun is litter trained.

I think that an x-pen would be much more practical in that you can move and clean around it and it’s much more portable and I don’t think that a C&C cage will be as sturdy as far as levels for big big rabbits. Cloroplast is pretty slippery too and big rabbits don’t seem to have the traction like little ones do….it’s perfectly fine for guinea pig cages though.

There is not going to be any way you can keep the fleece clean either – really not practical – a large area rug that is cheap is better – I get mine at Walmart. You don’t need liners anyway for rabbits.

You can decorate in other ways too – you need to think more practical for housing – an x-pen also has a gate to come in and out of and this does not.

That is a cool cage but it truly does not make sense to me at all. I would not use ramps either for these large rabbits – they aren’t jumpers and they are VERY HEAVY and their bones are very delicate.

I have been doing alot of looking around for x-pens, I kinda like the idea. I found a white one, it has 8 panels (my c&c was going to be white anyway and I want her to have alot of space even if that means she gets most of my room lol) but I only have two problems with a x-pen. 1. She won’t have her loft that she loves (I was going to build pet stairs for her because she hates ramps anyway) and 2. The flooring issue. Now my dad told me to use the foam mats in the garage (puzzle piece ones) but they are gray and dirty so I found some that look like wood floor so babies can hang out it the kitchen I guess without clashing with the decor lol. Would that work? Then the fleece is not that big of a deal I just like the extra decor of christmas fleece for winter or flowers for spring or whatever. My uncle is also willing to help my mom bulid a little house for her if needed in the cage because they will also be making me a hay rack/box. What do you think?

Do you have a link to the x-pen?  Some that are made for small animals are very flimsy and not functional really.  I love the x-pens because they are easy to fold up and clean around – they have clips that you can just open it up and clean that way.  It just functions so much better than a C&C cage in my opinion.

As long as the x-pen is the tallest you can get, you can do something like this for a loft:

                                  http://www.leithpetwerks.com/prodpa…code=PL180

I do not have these play land things but I like the idea of that grid box things for big buns in that they can use the top (which I probably would not grid but make it solid if I was making it for them to use as a loft (but like the grids for the sides) and they can use it as a tunnel – so it can be multi-functional and it can be moved for easy cleaning.  I think if you can construct something like this you will get the same feel of the loft but in a more functional way.

I think as long as she doesn’t chew those rubber things, that would be fine – I am not familiar with how they clean and hold odors though in case she urinates on it.  Poops are not a problems.

Here are some that I found:

                                    http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind…d=12006551

http://www.petsmart.com/product/ind…Id=3510034 (Found this one cheaper on Amazon)

Here are what the mats look like:

                                    http://www.amazon.com/We-Sell-Mats-…floor+mats

I like those play land things you showed me, but then I was looking around some more and saw that Beka27 had her husband make her that “sideways E” house and saw that a girl on youtube made the same thing for her bunny and I was thinking that would be good as a loft and house all in one (it just has to be bigger to fit Sophie). Would that be ok?

I would go for the metal ones – I’ve had the plastic ones and they are difficult to deal with – they do look nice but I had problems configurating and moving this.

I’ve never used those mats, but give it a try as long as he doesn’t chew them – they look nice.

Oh, yes, what Beka did would be great! Her set up would be perfect for you Flemmy!

Thank you so much for the advice! Yes, I do love her setup, very big and lots of space that would be awesome for Sophie!

She would love not to be cramped up anymore, I guess thats why she takes the dogs bed! lol

I know my cage looks small, but it is only for at night when they do not have freedom to run around the living room. and Blue does have room where he lays out and stretches his hind legs all the way out too. I would never keep them in a cage all the time, it is just cruel.

I was about to recommend my “sideways E” but it was already mentioned… lol. I absolutely love my set-up. It is super easy to clean and I can move the pen away from the wall as needed to vacuum behind it. I’ve tried the NIC cube thing in the past and I never felt it was sturdy enough for my two buns (about 4 and 6 pounds), there’s no way it would be sturdy enough IMO for a bunny that is 10+ pounds. I love that I can walk inside of the pen to spot clean, feed, or refill hay without having to crawl in or take it completely apart.

Dog exercise pens are made to contain large breed dogs, so they will definitely be sturdy enough to contain a large breed rabbit. These are available at pet stores under various names. I use Midwest pens. I would stay away from “small animal exercise pens” (like the white ones at Drs. Foster and Smith). The wire is more like bird cage wire and now very strong at all.

I love the idea of the wood grain foam panels…

I was wondering if this pen would work ok? Is there any concern about the rabbit chewing off the coating?

Welcome, we do ask that people do not pull up and reply to old posts – it just confuses members as they are reading the initial post and replying to that so piggybacking on an old post is not recommended.

That being said, the coating on the pen is not a concern but you will want to get the tallest possible pen available – this is too short.
