I will be moving in a week and will have to change the current living situation for my 2 rabbits.  The first option would be a limited area upstairs where it is all wood floors – one of the two refuses to walk on wood floors.  So they would be upstairs with lots of light a comotion, but would not be able to run around much or get much exercise due to lack of carpeted areas.  The second option would be in the partially finished basement.  I could give them a large area for the permanent residence (2 xpens plus some) on carpet plus additional run around time on carpet.  They will not be isolated in the basement since that would be where our “family room” would be and we’d spend a lot of time down there.  The only problem is there would be limited natural light because there is a lack of windows.  Which area do you think they would benefit more from?  I could make them a small ‘permanent’ place upstairs and carry them downstairs to run around sometimes, but they really hate being picked up carried.  So they would definitely get more exercise/play time downstairs, just less light.   What do you guys think would be better?

If it were me, I would chose the basement option – even though there isn’t much natural light, you can provide some light and they would have more runtime due to the carpet and sounds like more social time.

Can you put a couple inexpensive floor rugs down? I like the basement plan better, but I worry about the lack of light.

If you are concerned about lack of natural light you can get UV lights, not the reptile kind (which generate heat) but they sell ones that don’t, I know the avian ones don’t give off much heat and there are also human ones … it is the best alternative to having windows for natural lighting. You can even buy a timer switch for a few dollars so it turns on for a regular day/night cycle.

Upstairs you could give them some cheap throw rugs, that is what I did for Stickers cause she hates wood but destroys carpet, so she’s in our wood room with some 5×7 rugs from walmart (only cost $20) so she can get traction.

Either can work, just depends which one you think is best for your situation. Being able to get plenty of interaction time is important, so if you couldn’t spend much time with them upstairs, I would go for the basement option.

The basement idea sounds better since you will give your rabbit more area to run. You can also provide like down there since there isn’t much natural light!

I was thinking lights on a timer as well, great minds think alike! I also vote for the large basement exercise area.

Awesome, thats what I was hoping for since they really like having a large carpeted area to run around on. I have no problem leaving regular lights on for them during the day, but would I also need UV lights? Or would normal lights be fine?

I don’t think they need the UV, was just mentioning that in case you were worried about the vitamin D intake. It’s important for animals who need high calcium diets, but bunnies are probably OK with just a little sunlight as they can get it.
