I read some where that the yellow pages is a good toy for bunnies, well I tried it and let me tell you all that it is awesome!!  he loves this thing, of course it will leave a mess on your floor but I rather vacuum than get angry when seeing a bunch of wholes in my carpet. I recommend it, I do want to ask, although my bun doesn’t eat the paper I know this type of books have a lot of ink and the one that leaves your fingers dirty just by flipping the pages, can this be harmful to a bunny even though he is not eating it?

        Thank you!

Glad to hear it’s been such a success!  It’s great to have something that’s  free and gives so many hours of entertainment.

I think most buns really enjoy newspapers and phone books. I don’t imagine the ink is GOOD for them, but haven’t heard of a bunny getting sick from it. Also, i think buns mostly tear and toss more of the paper than they consume.

Glad to hear it doesn’t hurt bunnies, he doesn’t eat any of it, just tears it and shreds it.

I would make sure that your bunnies do not ingest too much of it.  Paper can cause an impaction in the stomach and/or they don’t eat their hay which is vital to their diet, so just keep a bit of an eye on them.  Mostly, like gravehearted said, they just tear it and boy do my two just LOVE the mess it makes.  Bonsai will strut around all manly as if to say, yep I did that all by myself!

gravehearted – according to my vet, the ink in newspapers and phonebooks is non-toxic and deemed safe.   As far as magazines and glossy ink, that determination is still out according to her.  So she always says don’t give it until they know for sure.

Heheheh how I chuckle. I’ve just returned from the boudoir where I found Mr Bum sat happily munching on a Yellow Pages. He stopped and looked round at me as if to say, “Do YOU mind?!”

I just gave Henri my CPA exam book to destroy yesterday – it was great fun watching him rip up the pages, especially the ones on tax regulation and contract law. He even took one page (on capital gains tax) in his cage and put it in his litterbox, I guess a little bathroom reading for later It’s not a glossy page book, just that plain paper (and he doesn’t ingest it anyways, just makes a big mess because he knows that irritates Dad!)
