I recently rescued two lionhead bunny brothers from my local animal shelter that were scheduled to be euthanized.  I got them neutered (it’s been about 2-3 weeks now), but for some reason, they are still spraying urine everywhere!  They were living in a fairly large x-pen set up which they settled nicely in with a large potty box filled with hay, toys, etc.  But I noticed the other day that they sprayed urine all over my carpets  (and I don’t mean a little)!  It’s taken me a couple of days to get the stains out.  I moved them into a large Marchioro in the meantime while I come up with a new strategy.  Right now, space is limited since I have a large 2-story Leith cage and 2 x-pen set ups in the bunny room. I may have to design some type of barrier I can put at the bottom sides of the x-pen to catch the excess urine. I think they are around 6mos to a year old.  I’ve rescued and fostered bunnies for a long time but this is the first time I’ve encountered this problem. How long before the spraying dies down?  Other than that, they are the cutest, most lovable snuggle bunnies you’ve ever seen!  Their names are Coco and Cappuccino (they are my new avatar).

        Thanks.

It may take a month or two to decrease… or it might not stop. With males, if they were spraying a lot prior to being neutered, it can become a habitual behavior, not a hormonal behavior.

Remind us how many rabbits you have and are these guys in a different area from the rest? If not, it could be territorial also.

It may take longer than that for their hormones to calm down.

What is your litter box setup like?

Right now, I have 4 rabbits, two which are fosters which live in the bunny room. Coco and Cappuccino had an x-pen set up in my spare bedroom away from the rest of the pack. I’ve decided to rearrange the spare bedroom to see if I can get more space for another x-pen set up. In the meantime, we’ll see if the spraying will die down. They seem to be potty box trained as there are no poops anywhere except in the potty box. Thanks.

                UPDATE!

It looks like the spraying has died down a bit! They are so cute and loveable! This weekend, my BF and I will rearrange the spare bedroom and will try another x-pen set up. I found a high side potty box I think will work. We’ll see. Thanks again!
