No matter where I put Lola’s hay box she always poops and pees in it while eating. It’s annoying. Even if I put it in the opposite side of the cage, so I know it’s not a ‘this is my poop corner’ thing. I just don’t know what to do. I feel like half her hay is wasted because I’m constantly taking out the pooped on hay. Plus I’m wasting a bunch of money like that.

        Any suggestions??

Rabbits will poop while they are eating, it’s just something that all rabbits do. Some people will actually put their hay in their litterbox so they can eat and use the bathroom. My rabbit, Smokey, used to do the same thing as yours. I got a hay rack that you hang on the outside of the cage, put the hay in, and they pull it through the bars. It cost me about $4.95 at Petco/Petsmart. Ever since then, the problem of wasted hay has been eliminated

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that. I have one, it’s just so small I gave up using it. She eats A LOT of hay so I was putting more hay in like every 45 mins. It just got to be too much. On the rare occasion that I give her pellets I’ll still use that though.

I’ll look around to see if I can find a bigger one though.

I just put the hay in the litterbox. Easier that way

What about one of those wooden feeders that has the holes on the side for the hay to be pulled out of? You could place that right next to the litter box so she can sit in the box and eat at the same time. I never really had a problem with my rabbits pooping in the hay. I know a lot of people put it in the litter box to encourage pooping in the litter box. Mine have a separate box that I put their hay in and they don’t really poop in there.

I put the hay in the litterbox in the front corner (he has a big cat box). He loves to sit there, chow down and poo all at once. Efficient, I think

I don’t have one of those, but you just gave me a great idea! I have this square box that I can put hay in and put holes in and just put it next to the litter box. Same idea, I just won’t have to buy anything. lol

Alright I did the box thing. Let’s hope it works. I also put her water over by her litterbox too. It takes up a little more room in her cage than I hoped, but she’s getting a new cage soon anyway. Plus when I come across a smaller box I can always switch out. Thanks for the ideas everyone!

She’s totally just chewing on the box.

I know those rabbit boxes are pretty expensive, they run about $50-$60 from when I researched them before. So I just used the hay rack at the pet store and refill her hay whenever I see it’s empty. Smokey is also right in front of me since we share a room, so it’s not too big of a hassle for me.

I did see at Petco the other day that they sell BIG wooden ones now. Which I was tempted to get, but I was already spending money on a new litter box and hay for her. But it’s about 2-3x the size of the plastic one, and this one sits inside the cage.

I also love this website for my chinchilla. They are only a state away from me and are super friendly and take requests, plus ship quickly. On the page, there is a hay feeder made of wood at the top:

The other question is where are you getting your hay from? If you can work out a super cheap source for hay (like a local farm that sells bales) or bulk hay boxes ordered online, you won’t be spending as much on hay so the bit that gets wasted won’t be as big of a deal.

I feel your frustration. My lop, Bindi just started pooing everywhere recently, in his hay and all over his mats. Not sure why the sudden solo poop war. I keep telling him Im going to buy him Huggies and cut a hole for his tail if he doesnt smarten up. Im constantly cleaning poop.
