Any top tips for what to do with your house rabbit when you go away?  We are going for five days, is it fair to leave her at home and ask someone to feed her and put her outside in her run daily, rather than cause stress by uprooting her to a strange house

hi Fiona,

Do you have a local rabbit rescue? Many of them do a wonderful job with pet sitting or can make a good pet sitter recommendation. I always feel better leaving my bunnies with someone who knows about bunnies. We sometimes have a friend come and stay and that works well too. I dont generally like to board them at the vet's since there is no space for them to run, but some vets cater to bunny sitting. You might call and ask them about bunny sitting too.

It's always important to leave clear instructions about feeding and care. Plus leaving an authorization for the pet sitter to take your bunny to the vet in case of illness is a good idea.

I know my bunnies get a little sad and depressed when they don't get enough attention from people... they both like being talked to and receiving their daily quota of petting. Because of this, I would probably not feel comfortable leaving them at home with a pet sitter. Instead, I'd take them to a bunny boarding place (like a HRS center) or have them stay with a loving friend.

there's a veterinary clinic near my area that offers room and board for pets for when owners go out of town or even during the day while your at work.  Maybe you can check if there's anywhere that offers something similar near your area.

This is actual perfect timing for this question.  I was just putting together a pet sitter guide for people to fill out for their rabbit sitters.    When are you going on vacation?  I will be putting up the guide in the next few days.

I have a pet sitter come to my home and I have also pet sit for others, and no it is not too much to ask for someone to come once or twice a day.   It's best if they are rabbit savvy, but if not, then it's best to educate them on signs to watch for that mean a bunny is ill.

It's also a good idea to have a credit card on file with a local rabbit savvy vet, along with contact information as well as directions from your house, so that in the case of an emergency, the sitter can rush to the vet if need be.

If you are leaving very soon, I'll go in more detail, but if you can wait a day or so, I'll be back to post when the pet sitter guide is up.
