O.K. I could not resist the Pedi Paws, I gave in when I was at BB&B.  For those of you who do not know what it is, it is basically a Dremmel with a safety cover and hole for the pet nail and a drum with a sandpaper belt on it.  I need to get some batteries for it and see how loud this thing is, however I was wondering, have any of you tried it on your rabbit?  I plan on giving a full report of this “exciting” event for my rabbits. HA HA.  I know I am doomed to thumping, feet flicks, the fuzzy butt and the cold stare for a few hours afterwards.

Ooooh, I am very interested in seeing your report, Scarlet_Rose! This would be awesome if it works well.

Oh you have to give us the details!  I failed miserably with the nail clippers I bought and looked at what you got and wondered if I should have gotten that! Can’t wait to hear how it works.

I’ll for sure let you all know tomorrow, I have to go pick up some batteries. It really interested me because it looks like it rounds off the cut edges and so they won’t snag or cause scratches on human skin. I figured that $20.00 minus my $10.00 off coupon was a good deal and figured what the heck. If all else fails my neice has a dog and I could give it to her. I plan to dose my two with Rescue Remedy first and watch the video they have online. I am bracing myself and I think that for once I may have to burrito them – I usually don’t as they are pretty cooperative. I’ve been nicknamed the “bunny whisperer” by some because it is rare for me to have to burrito a bunny for any reason. Wish me luck! Besides, at lease ONE of us has to try it here. I figured why not me?

I remember Digmexnow bringing this up awhile back as she was thinking about getting it or something similar, and I questioned how in the world would a bunny deal with THAT?!

But then those darn pedipaw infomercials began intriguing me! I kept thinking, did they drug those dogs? And that cat, how in the heck did that cat just hang out there getting his nails smoothed without even the slightest “I hate you” look.

I remember sitting with my brother one time and my husband at another time, and the pedipaw infomercial came on each time, and both my brother and husband commented about it as a possible good idea, and I’d always say…”No way, too stressful”, but then we’d both stare at the completely calm animals getting their nails done. After watching it so many times, I have weakened, and am doubting my first instinct.

So I have to admit, I am really curious, and if it works, I will have to email Digmexnow and eat crow.

I get at least a thousand emails in my box per day with the Pedi-Paws header on them. I simply won’t bring myself to open one.

Well, I’ll keep my fingers crossed and prayers going for you Rose…I am dubious to the extremes on this one. 0_0

But just curious…now is this to substitute for a trim or after-trim care?

DITTO First I was like ‘no bloody way are you going to be able to use that on a rabbit’ but I’ve seen those commercials and the idea of it not squishing the nail at all has me totally sold! You’ll have to let us know!! (ok everyone buy stocks BEFORE the news gets out )

Hmm..I can’t wait to hear how it goes!  I had been thinking of getting one for the dogs but then thought that I’d just keep with the tortue of nail clipping.  But if it’s good for Tucker too…then it might be worth it to spend the cash on it.  I didn’t realize they were that cheap…was it 20.00 after your coupon or before?

Hey everyone!  I just used the Pedi Paws on my most nervous-wreck rabbit, Daffodil and didn’t use the bunny burrito and NO Rescue Remedy either (this is totally unheard of for me)! I am totally abashed and in shock.  Could it be too good to be true?

So, I went up to the store and bought some batteries (FYI – it takes 2 “C” batteries) popped them in and turned the thing on first to see how loud it was going to be.  Folks, it is really, really quiet.  It makes a quiet buzzing/humming noise, not unlike some of those back massager things that you find. So I became a LITTLE less skeptical. I could handle it, BUT could my rabbit handle it?  So I got out the towel to put on my legs (even though I had long pants on) got my little Ms. Daff and let her sit on my lap and gave her a few cuddles then I braced my hand on top of her to keep her from being frightened off and switched it on…..and guess what? NOT A BLOOMING THING!  She was looking at me like, yeah, so what is YOUR problem ma?  I rubbed the unit along her side and back and whatnot, and not even a twitch from her. Hmm. So I turned it off and then back on again.  Same reaction.   Alright, I was just going to get her used to the noise if I had to and put it away until tomorrow and give her a goodie but nope we’re all clear there.  So, I figured what the heck, lets file ONE nail.  So I picked up her paw, I watched her closely and she didn’t care so I secured a nail and started.

She didn’t even miss a beat y’all, she was calm, cool, collected, her breathing was normal and she was like, hey, this is pretty cool.  I have to say though that there is not a pleasant smell from the filing of the nail, BUT it does do a very smooth job AND traps the filings so it isn’t going all over the place and making a mess.  I would not recommend using this though if the nails are fairly long, like say more than 1/8 of an inch, use the regular nail clippers first then use the Pedi Paws to maintain the nail after a good trim and blunt off any sharp edges.  Especially if you are afraid of trimming rabbit nails I could see someone having the groomer do it and then use this in the interim for a while and if needed, take the rabbit in to the vet for another trim, but not as frequently.

Yes, this thing works wonders, I am amazed and in awe.  It files the nail bluntly and you round it up and over the top a little to smooth things out.  I tested it against my bare skin and NO SCRATCH.   So Binky Bunny, what type of hat are you going to eat (I don’t think anyone should eat crow)?

Remember this all takes confidence in YOU and utilizes a building block of trust between you and the rabbit.  This is why I really wanted to try this, rather than have someone who is really nervous about the clippers trying it out with abysmal results and running a rabbit to the vet or and/or having to patch yourself up.  Just because it worked wonders for me, remember I’ve been doing this for a long time.  Make your rabbit feel safe, make it a positive experience and relax, you rabbit knows your mood!  So if you are nervous, so are they! It might be best if you have a dog to practice on, try that first to gain some confiedence in yourself and using it.

Oh yes, lest I forget, I DID get a THUMP from the experience and a half-butt until I offered her a treat and all was forgiven.

TuckerBunz the Pedi Paws was $20.00 full retail price, but I had a coupon for $10.00 off. So I paid about $11 for it with tax. I was surprised myslef it wasn’t all that much. The replacement sanpaper drums are about $8.00 for a dozen including S & H.

Oh wow! I thought it was so much more!  Is the opening big enough for like a larger dog’s nails do you think?  I have a 55 lb norwegian elkhound that hates having her nails cut.

So do you make house calls?  Ok so how much would you say you filed down? 1/8inch or what.  It really works?  I’m excited!  So if I had a heck of a time with the clippers you think I could use this successfully?

There is a pretty big opening for a larger nail. It is 1/4″ at it’s widest point then narrows like a triangle.

Sure I make house calls…as long as you can pay the airfare.  LOL Seriously though I do think it is something you can do on your own, just have confidence, confidence, confidence. In my post, I just wanted to add a mini-disclaimer because I did not want everyone to think it would be this easy the first time for them. Since no-one else has tried. Also I really think it is worth the $20. To me that is not a lot of money down the drain if it didn’t work.

It says to use it for 3-5 second intervals at a time and do not push hard with the nail against the sandpaper, let it do the work and gently hold the nail against it. Overall, I think I trimmed about 1/8 of an inch off and it was all good. It took about 15 seconds to do one nail.

Wow! Very interesting. So hat eating time it is! (I just emailed digmexnow) The only thing that worries me is the 15 seconds per nail. I get my bunny on my lap, spot the quick and clip! I don’t waste time especially with Jack who is extremely strong and HATES getting his nails done. Where did you get that coupon?

This sounds great. I’m going to try modify my drill as I have the drum attachment already. Plus a bag of arbor bands(the sanding belt) that my old work place was throwing out. I’m a dental tech and am pretty handy with a drill. The noise my drill makes is a concern thou. I remember the other thread about this and was worried about friction burn but I guess if you clip then use drill to smooth off, the contact time is lessened.

I found this on net the other day regarding using a dremmel: http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/dremel/dremel.html

I think you should be able to find new arbor bands in your local hardware too. Unless the pedi paws one is specialised(???)

Well I’ll be jiggered. 0_0 I’m amazed, Rose! It really was that simple? No muss, no fuss? *jaw drops*

I don’t know if my buns will put up with 15 seconds, I may have confidence but they have the determination of a cornered animal! But hey, I am all for something that doesn’t involve sharp blades that can cut veins and tender skin. Looks like I’ll have to open one of those emails!

But you do believe this is a maintenance product, not one to take off length? So I will probably have to clip the first time, but then how long would you say it should be before the PediPaws comes out?

Pip’s nails seem to grow faster than one month’s time. And in that time she remembers well what happens when mommy gets out that towel and the flashlight and that funny bunny shaped container.

Hello all! Yes 15 seconds per nail can be time consuming, however if you were to clip the nail first then take about 3 seconds to smooth it out, then it will be all good. As for trimming nails, maybe I am not used to the technique yet so it took me longer, but I was being very gentle with it. The product says to check every 5 seconds to see how close to the quick you are.

Rachel – Thanks! I braved it for you guys!

I do think I will watch the video again online to see if I might be doing it wrong so it is taking longer to trim the nail or I may have over-estimated how long I was doing it for. I’ll try again and let you all know.

I got the coupon in the mail because I subscribe to their mailing list. Go to their web site and sign up or this last Sunday they had a 20% off coupon in with the ads in the newspaper and it may be possible that you’ll find it at Walgreens for less. I just happened to be at BB&B.

Binky Bunny – Don’t worry I was super skeptical about this thing too. Especially the noise factor but it is really quiet.

Mimz- I don’t know how often you would use it to maintain a good trim with clippers, my guess would be about once a week? Depending on how fast they grow. I’ll keep a log and get back to you on that.

Jerseygirl – I would be really careful, and might not even recommend that you use a dental tool, especially with the noise besides which the product I tested has a safety guard on it for just nails so the drum won’t get caught up with bunny toes or fur.

All in all, you’re best off keeping the clippers and just using this to smooth things out. Like it has been mentioned here, a look and a snip is faster than trying to grind them down. Highly touted product but more time consuming if you rely on it to trim the nails without clipping them.

I was a bit worried about how much pressure you needed to use with this filer. Bunny toe bones are pretty delicate. I absolutely detest clipping my buns nails and often wondered about the pedi paw.

Thanks so much for sharing the results with us.

Not a problem Vashira, needless to say, hold the toe firmly and don’t let the spinning disc grab it and torque the tow into the unit as that would definately be a disaster. I would suggest practicing with an orange stick that is normally used as a cuticle pusher for nails. They are about as hard as the nails on a rabbit and it lets you get a feel for it.

Ok I *still* need to buy one!! I keep forgetting when I’m out and then I’m clipping nails at the shelter cursing my scatterbrained-ness!!! LOL

I will let you all know but I’m super confident mine and the shelter buns will like it…What do you guys think about disinfecting it? Do you think it’d be possible or should I buy two?? I don’t want to bring it home ‘un disinfected’ and use it on my guys from the shelter…

Not sure if they are sold in stores or only by phone/TV.

I bought mine at BB&B (Bed, Bath & Beyond) and used a coupon. I didn’t want to have a first try on my poor rabbits so the orange stick was right there and I thought, aha! A happy accident and it gave me some practive too. Pedi Paws has a video on theri web site you’ll want to watch to help get you in practice with it.
