My rabbit has a URI and has been on azithromycin for 48 hours (also baytril for a ear infection for 48 hours and chloremphenical eye drops for two weeks for a teary eye). azithromycin is the second antibiotic last week he was on a diff antibiotic with no success. He has a pretty serious uri  and im not seeing any improvement for the uri so i wanted to complement the treatment with steam should i do that? or it wont make a diff also how would i go about doing that?

I've had treated a rabbit with an upper respiratory with a nebulizer and amakacin - nebulizing is just a different way to administer an antibiotic.

However, I would give him the full treatment that he is currently on before you make any changes. It will definitely take more than 2 days of treatment to see some improvement.

I don't know if steam is the right treatment, I guess I would worry about choking if he is having some problems breathing. I know it's used for people, but we probably have an easier time controlling our bodies with shifting our body to breath easier and we can blow our noses.

Consider if this does not help to ask the vet about doing a culture and sensitivity test.

I guess I also question about how steaming will keep the fresh air circulated.

by steam i mean ive read about turning on a shower and let  the bathroom fill with steam and let the bunny breath that in

One of my rabbits, Totoro, had a URI when he was brought to the humane society before I adopted him. I read in his medical history and notes while he was there that they gave him a nebulizer treatment. That definitely worked for him because he started to improve after a week or so, and eventually healed fully. It will take more than 48 hours to determine if the treatment is working. It is important to complete full treatment, especially with antibiotics. Lots of vibes for your bunny.

I would be concerned about the steam treatment because it could make things worse. I know sometimes when people have asthma or colds they find it difficult to breathe in the shower. Your bunny can't really tell you if it's making it difficult for him to breathe.

i think the reason it helps is it loosen the mucas in the lungs and that way he can cough it up easier. so what i was saying is to help his treatment do you think i should use steam . i remember reading somewhere maybe medi-rabbit that steam can loosen the mucus.
