        Hi everyoneee,

           So i recently just got a new job and am working 40 hrs a week while also taking a class at my local community college.  I feel as if i no longer have as much time for my Bun as i should.  Im barley home and when i am home i not usually in my room to much where my bunny stays.  He has a 3 level condo but i still feel that he needs to be out more then i can offer him.  He cant be out of his cage when im not in my room because i dont have my room bunny proofed and in order to keep the air flow in the house going my doors have to stay open and having 3 dogs makes in not an option to. Im really in a rock in a hard place bc i love him so much but i feel as if he deserves better to be with someone who can have him out more.  Hes only 9 months old and is very sweet, hes also fixed and litter trained.  I really dont know what to do here, do i just keep him since i know i give him good care or do i try to find him a new home with someone who can have him out more and care for him…?  Any suggestions are welcome.

          Here’s my feeling on this:

          1. While you are very busy right now and feel like you don’t spend enough quality time with him or he has enough time out, this is not always going to be the case – it is just a temporary situation;
          2. You know the care he has with you, but you cannot know if he will get the same care in another home – he could very well be truly neglected (and he’s not with you even though you perceive he is);
          3. You also want to take the same consideration for your rabbit that you do for your dogs – to be honest, it would be much more difficult to find a good home for your rabbits than it would be for your dogs.

          I hope you decide to keep him – he’s lucky to have someone who even has the consideration for him that you do.

            Evan,
            What about bunny-proofing your room and get metal baby gate with nic cubes on the bottom for extra protection?
            I know you don’t really want to give Todd a new home. But I also know how you feel. I’m coming up to a very similar situation. My solution is to get Bunjamin a friend and make him a room that is bunny friendly so he has lots of run time and then spend what time I do have with him. I know that even though that’s not ideal it’s probably better than anyone else can give him right now and it’s only temporary. I’d worry with the outweighing amounts of bad homes to good homes he would not get the same good care he’s used to if you re-home him.

            Do you think your mom would be willing to spend time with him if you don’t have any. I saw the picture of her spoiling him

              i cant getting rid of my dogs, i live with my parents and they are there pets. My bunny is strictly MINE. Yes the dogs are mine too but i cant make the decision to get ride of them, nor would i want to get ride of them.

              I understand what you mean…but this is going to be my job for a while and yeah maybe hes better with me but what of i can find someone who can do the same but have him out more…? =/

                    I wouldn’t want you to get rid of the dogs, just making a point is all.

                    The tube things you find in the electrical section in Lowes or Home Depot.

                    It sounds like your mom is a busy person as well! But it sounds like your parents are caring people and do try to give him some attention, so that’s very nice.

                      I’ve acquired several rabbits in my adulthood b/c people no longer had time for them.  Since I finished grad school and have started working, I tend to work about 50 hrs wk.  My bunny time is spent w/ the cats as well, and is usually evenings (i.e. 3 hrs).  This is when I let them out in the living room for supervised play w/ the cats.  I too would not give up a single one of my pets.  Even though it’s 3 hrs a day w/ everyone, it’s worth it for me, and probably them.  They have a nice pen area w/ lots of toys.  I have 2 bunnies so they have each other.  Do the bunny proofing and I feel he will be fine.  No one loves a pet, better than ourselves!

                      Get the cord covers as said in the electrical section of hardware store; it’s basically plastic conduit, very cheap.  You can also get aquarium rubber tubing (can be more expensive).

                      I prefer to make my gates out of NIC panels rather than baby gates.  I zip tie the pieces together and screw in eye hooks into the wall or door jam.  I then zip tie the gate to one end of the door jam and use a twist tie to attach the other side.  Very easy.  Easier than it sounds!

                        Amazon also sells cord protectors cheap if you prefer online like me I’m glad you’ve decided to bunny-proof. I clipped with those strong little clips from Home Depot a pen to Bunjamin’s cage when we’re at my parents because he can’t be free range or run around the whole room. I even put a rug under the pen in case he gets frisky and chews. That would be a nicer set-up for when you are at work. If he’s trustworthy to leave in your whole room you could also just xpen the door off to provide a barrier between him and dogs. We do x-pen at my parents house and when we’re not home a baby gate at the doorway so he still gets airflow. Our dogs also don’t bother him but we do it for extra safety.

                          I went through this too at one point with my first buns. I actually posted an ad and interviewed people. After meeting people and talking about how they would care for her, I realized that I was better for her, even though they may have more time. I learned not to be too hard on myself.

                            Bunnies have a very hard time finding new homes in shelters. If you give him up, the chances he’ll have a better life with someone else aren’t very high (many people would never think of building a 3 level condo, for example) and you’ll always wonder how he’s doing. I think it’s better to keep him, improve his situation how you can (giving him a bigger area while you’re away, for example) and wait for the day when you’ll have more time to spend with him. Our life situations can change many times over the course of our pets lives, but they can adapt as long as they’re getting good care.

                              I would advise you to keep your bunny. I volunteer at a rabbit sanctuary and we stay full, as do most of the rescues that I know of. We all have to turn away rabbits because we have no room for them. It is very difficult to find good homes for rabbits and we always encourage people to keep theirs if at all possible, and to make changes that will allow them to do so.

                              I have gotten cord wrap from Radio Shack, but it was very time consuming to wrap the cords and it’s not very thick. I also have cord protection that I ordered from Bunny Bytes, http://www.bunnybytes.com/cgi-bin/start.cgi. It is listed under Supplies.  It’s black corrugated tubing that easily slips over the cords and comes in 1/2″ or 3/4″ thicknesses. I know you can get various other tubing at home supply stores.

                                I am also a student, going to school full time and working a lot. At times, I feel like I am neglecting my bunny, but she has my boyfriend and my dad to keep her company, plus she sleeps during the day.

                                Rabbit proofing your place is very well worth it. Not only does it allow for you to keep her out of places that she should not be in, you can feel more at ease that she has more room to play in and not worry about things being chewed.

                                  I’m really glad you’ve decided to try and keep him and bunny-proof your room for him! I, to, agree that keeping him and knowing he has good care (even if you can’t spend as much time with him as you want right now) is better for him than giving him away. SOOOO many people think they want/can care for a bunny and then suddenly realize they can’t or don’t really take the time to do the research that these little guys need. It’s so heart breaking and he’s really REALLY lucky to have a bunny master out there who cares for him so much!

                                            That’s a great way for him to get more room.

                                            I ditto everything in Sarita’s post. I know it’s hard to not feel guilty when you don’t have enough time. But he’s with someone who loves him and if you were to give him away you’ll never know where he could end up. We had a sad story about a member in the same situation who chose a new home carefully only to see her bunnies end up on Craigslist several months later. She was able to get them back and realized they were not taken care of very well at all.

                                            Todd is lucky to have you!

                                              It’s great! As for jumping over, don’t put anything like a box around the edges because that will just aid him. It looks tall enough though, Todd can’t jump on top of his cage right? So if he can’t then the x-pen height should work!
