Tip for giving bun meds by mouth syringe.

Hey guys, long time no post!

I’ve had to take Thane to the vets yesterday after noticing he was sore downstairs. He has an ulcerated rectum due to too much ‘happy time’ with his toy dog!! He’s had the issue for a while and it’s never gotten better, mostly because I had such difficulty in administering his meds. He’s a wriggler! After much frustration, I tried the following:

I took him downstairs to the kitchen table, an unfamiliar environment so he was a little nervous and less reluctant to stay still. Sat him on a towel on the table and wrapped him. Put my left arm around him and pushed up his lip, with my right hand I was able to put the syringe in his mouth and successfully feed him meds!!
First time ever!

I’ve had great difficulty with this for a year, maybe this can help others

Good to hear from you and your bun! If you don’t have to give the meds too often, sometimes it works to mash it up with a bit of banana so that they’ll eat it by themselves. Sounds like you’ve found a good method too though .

I just had to give Hunny meds for the 1st time a couple days ago (after her spay) and I was worried about how I was gonna get it in especially with a bunny with a sore belly had I didn’t wanna have to pick up & hold on to… and to my surprise it was so simple – I got down to her level on the floor with the filled syringe & held it out for her to smell… I kinda wiped it on her lips & once she got a taste of the med (Berry flavored) she started licking the tip of the syringe. As she licked at it I slowly pushed on the plunger part & she just kept licking it up as it came out & WA LA! Not a drop spilled. I’ve been doing that since Thursday and she hasn’t fought once… No stressed out bunny, no stressed out momma!

Lulu loved her meds too and would take them no problem! But force feeding her water and critical care was another story! I made this video to help others find a way to feed their buns!

Good video, Mocha! I like the trick of holding the bun’s front paws- that might work with Bun if my husband can’t help. I’ve never been good at administering meds by myself, but sometimes it’s a must. Lulu is adorable- what a good bunny!

It’s great that it shows inserting the syringe from the side of the mouth, and only small portions at a time.  The only thing I would change though is the part where your bunny is on her back. It’s hard to see if you have her propped up a bit and I wouldn’t want people,  who have never done this before, to try that.   I know many people have given meds or critical care with their bunnies on their back, but there is still more risk for aspirating that way. I would suggest editing that part out.     I think the video though was very well done!  Good job!  It will certainly come in handy for us here to refer to if that “on the back” part is edited out. 

OH and this is BB — I just in here the forum doing a few little fixes here and there and I forgot to change hats to reply!

It’s a very well made video, but I must agree with BB about putting the burrito’d bunny on its back. Another way to administer the meds is, once you have the bunny burrito’d as you show, you can just set your thighs around bunny to hold her there securely on the floor, then begin to administer the syringe from the side of the mouth. You can secure the bunny more with one hand on her shoulders as well. After that great burrito, she’s already in place.

The part where she is in the burrito lying backwards in your arms. If she was propped more upright within your arms then that would show a safer way of giving meds that way.
