My hormonal not yet neutered bun, Badger, decided to cause a fight through the bars, and lost. Our other two tore a chunk of skin off of the top of Badger’s paw. Its bleeding pretty badly and doesnt want to put any pressure on it. Itll scab over for a few minutes, then start bleeding again. The torn skin is right in between his toes. He still has all of his toes and his toe nails. He is eating, and even ran around and tried to binky (causing it to bleed again). Its 2am here to the vets offices are closed, and the nearest emergency vet is over 4 hours away and only puts rabbits down (not going to happen!). We are going to call our vet first thing in the morning when they open, but in the meantime, any idea how to help him out? Hes not licking the wound either, yet

        EDIT

The long version of the final update is on page 3. The vet cleared Badger of any infections, but sent us home with some antibiotics anyway for a week just in case. But she said the wound looks like it has healed over very nicely, we did everything right until we could get Badger in to be seen, and that we dont have to up in for another check up on it unless he does get an infection. Thank you everyone for the advice and support!

Update, he looked me dead in the eye (im sitting next to his cage) and did the bunny flop. Hes resting now and still acting like its not a big deal, but i know rabbits hide pain very well so i still am going to worry until we get him into the vets

He is sleeping on the paw. Ugh, it looks like so much pain, but he really doesnt care. It looks mostly scabbed over now, but i know that will tear when he tries to run around his cage again. I added extra bedding all over the cage instead of just in his litter boxes in case he bleeds more, and to help with traction and comfort. I have to question if i am over reacting though, since he really is acting like nothing happened until he runs then he picks that paw up. If we cant hit the vet tomorrow, we will be going as soon as they have an open spot for us to get in

At this point, its fully scabbed over but he keeps trying to run and play, then does head binkies when i tell him hes not allowed to. Hes still not licking it, and still holding it up half the time/putting pressure on it half the time. Hes eating and drinking, and made a pee puddle already so now we just wait for him to poop. Once he poops, i know he is pretty much ok and i over reacted, but for a good reason

Update again: He has noticed the wound. He wont clean it directly, but he was licking around it and licking his toes more excessively than normal. I stopped him by giving him tons of pets, but after a few minutes he went right back at it. We had to put a cone on him

Good call with the cone. It’s not a bad thing that it bled, blood rinses away bacteria + have properties that helps healing. For now I think it’s mostly a matter of keeping him from messing with it.
Poor little guy! Sadly they don’t seem to learn from getting hurt in fights :/

He is really hating the cone, but he can still eat and drink from the water bottle so sadly the little guy will have to deal with it until we can call the vets when they open. My boyfriend thinks the bone might be slightly exposed, but i honestly cant tell from all of the blood and Badger is acting so normal that i cant imagine the bone showing at all

I wish they would learn from fights D: This is not the first one hes caused, but it is the first that actually led to fur pulling and bleeding. He likes to taunt the other two which visibly irritates them, but they dont ever do much than lunge at the side of the cage or throw hay at him. This is the first time theyve ever bitten through the bars so it was very unexpected. Careless on our part for not watching close enough

We have poop! He pouted at me then started trying to get his cone off again, and behind him he left three healthy poops. I am glad he is not too stressed out to keep things moving

Our vet moved! They have a new equally qualified bunny vet though, but she is off today. We have an appointment set for tomorrow evening but will have to barrow a car since ours is still in the shop. If we cannot barrow a car from someone, we will reschedule for the next day, unless they have something planned. Luckily, our vet office is open until 10pm so it shuldnt be a problem borrowing from my boyfriends parents while they eat dinner, and have the car back by the time they go to bed

On the plus side, the wound looks very nice today and hes tolerating the cone a lot better. He only gets mad at the cone when it starts to tickle his neck and he cant scratch, so i go over and give him little scratches until he goes to sleep. Is it ok that hes sleeping abuot double as normal at this point? Still peeing, pooping, eating, and drinking. Hes not trying to play as much as earlier, but hes doing fine other wise. He is also still laying on it when he sleeps which grosses me out because it looks so painful but he doesnt care at all, lol. Oh, we can pick up some gauze from the store, would that be safe to wrap around his paw, or would we need a special kind of gauze? Anyway, the vets office has a vet tech who was trained to work on rabbits but they are not in right now. They made a note asking that vet tech to call me whenever she comes in to offer advice on if its safe to wait another day, and if not, they will tell me where else i can go to have Badger looked at

                              EDIT:

We got a call from the autoshop that our car is ready to pick up so no issues there any more We will see if the vet tech still recommends waiting till tomorrow, or seeing someone sooner instead. I will update again after we see a vet

I’m glad the wound looks better and that he’s eating and pooping! Whether you should put a dressing around his paw or not depends on the risk of getting dirt in it imo. But the vet tech will tell you what to do.

Even if it isn’t a bunny vet, they can still clean the wound and take a good look at it. My only concern would be them knowing what’s safe to use on bunnies.

The wound already has skin starting to grow back, is that normal? Maybe a lot less skin was torn than i had thought. He started having trouble eating his hay with the cone on so i took it off a few minutes ago. Ill leave it off until he notices the wound again, or before i go to bed later tonight. No response from the vet tech yet, but they did mention being under staffed today so maybe i will have to wait until tonight. Thank you guys for the vibes and advice

                                      Edit to add
Since taking his cone off he has binkied twice, dug through his hay sending it flying all over the cage (ive moved it back into the corner by his litter box), hes eaten some cecals, and fought to try to get out of his cage! I am surprised how fast rabbits seem to heal

I also have another question: What are some signs of infection? I want to be prepared to know what to look for just in case

I think rabbits bleed a lot. I accidentally clipped a nail too short once and freaked out over the amount of blood. Maybe the wound wasn’t as bad as you thought?

If you had the cone on, I’d suggest Neosporin (non-pain relief kind). But if the skin is healing, there’s probably no need.

I don’t know about infection beyond redness and fever.

I’m glad Badger is doing well and acting normally. Sending healing vibes for your boy.

Thank you! I think they just bleed a lot too. When it first happened, there was enough blood we thought his nail was ripped out, but after rinsing it with warm water then cool water it was clear all of his toes and nails were there and only the top of his paw was torn. We have neosporin set to the side, but im not sure if its safe. I was going to ask the vet tech whenever they call if everything on the neosprin is safe

Plain Neosporin is fine to use. You don’t want the kind with a pain reliever in it.

We will be picking some up in a little bit just in case. We only had a tube of Neosporin Plus. He got some hay in it earlier and let me use a moist towel to clean the hay out of it. He was in some pain while i was washing it out, so i think Neosporin would help atleast a little bit

The bun is now perma-coned for a while. The neosporin seemed to be helping, but he really hates it. I think he hates it because it makes his paw feel a little wet since we get some fur while putting the neosprin on. He would not stop flailing his paw and trying to lick it off. Even without the neosporin, he keeps trying to lick the wound. We have been given the ok to gauze wrap it while he has neosporin on to help hay from sticking to it, and he tries to eat the gauze wrapping. I have to change the gauze every 5 hours roughly. The vet will update me on what to do next when we go in this evening

Poor little darling! He must feel so frustrated in his cone. But there’s little else to do since you can’t really talk sense into a bunny.

I hope the vet-visit goes well!

When i unwrapped the gauze to let it air for a bit, he started running in circles. Is that normal? Google is telling me that running in circles means a head injury, but he has not hit is head at all. Could it mean that the wound hurts? Or that he is happy the gauze was off? Hes acting fine again. He is eating his pellets and his hay, but the circling was really weird to see. We will be asking the vet when we go in of course, but i was curious if anyone here knew anything about it too

I don’t think Badger would run if the wound hurt all that much. Maybe the circling was testing out his freedom/movement after the gauze was removed? Since he is behaving normally now, I would call it a happy circle but still ask the vet.

                                                            Poor baby. That looks deep.

The wound looks a healthy red though (to my untrained eyes). There looks to be some closing of the wound already on the outer edges.

It looks deep because its right inbetween his toes. The deep part is where his toes meet at his paw. He has really long toes for whatever weird reason. Its funny to watch him when he cleans his back feet because he spreads his toes and they look like skinny little fingers. Anyway, it is starting to heal over already where it scabbed quickly, and hes putting almost full pressure on it today!

I could believe that! He is a little over 1lbs (disabled mini dutch) and everything on his body is pretty in proportion aside from his toes, lol. They are about as long as a new born babies fingers, if not longer. Odettes toes sound cute Our mini rex has short and thick toes but they are so muscular. Our Nethie has tiny little toes and feets, and theyre so fluffy that you cant tell where they start and where they end during shedding seasons

Thank you! He is a super cutie who has no care in the world. He is also perfectly fine being handled and held in any positions (our previous vet had to check his anus before and just flipped him upside down quick, he just looked at her and sniffed her shirt lol). He was diagnosed with splay leg and a few muscle problems. When we got him he was under a pound and we knew that was crazy for a 3 month old dutch, so we took him to the vet to ask for advice. She had him on a diet of unlimited everything (hay, pellets, greens, certain hay based treats, ect) to try and get him to gain weight and grow, but after the next check up a month later, he only gained .3lbs. He was chowing down like a little monster too We had an extensive blood test done, an xray, ultrasound, and stool sample done. Nothing was wrong or abnormal. She did another blood test with another lab to be sure and the results were the same. She had him diagnosed with a muscle and weight problem of an unknown sort (couldnt afford another 500$+ for further testing that month). He cant gain weight easily and cant gain muscle easily, even though he really loves to eat and zoom around; he has limitless energy. He also has bad allergies that landed him choking one time, which Jerseygirl helped me through

Anyway, i will stop ranting about him, hehe. On our way to the vets we got a call saying she was called into an emergency surgery for someones pet so we had to reschedule. She is their only exotics vet, and Badger doesnt need surgery or stitches so we didnt mind rescheduling. We are now booked for early afternoon on Monday. Hoping who ever had their pet taken in for the surgery ends up alright

The cone is starting to wear down on the fur on the back of his neck, so for a little while we are going to try gauze and wrapping without the cone. Hopefully he wont tear it off soon after we put it on him

Maybe you could glue some fleece around the inner edge, if that’s what’s rubbing against his skin. You could use double-sided tape, maybe that’s better than glue, and cut a piece of fleece from a blanket and fold it over the edge of the cone.

To protect his skin a little bit you could perhaps rub some beeswax cream or Vaseline on it, but that might make him really annoyed because he can’t get at it.

We cut a sock at the rim to put around the lower part of the cone. That seemed to help a lot, and hes not able to rotate the cone as much as before (which i think was aiding in his fur thinning). When i take it off for him later and see that the fur there is still thinning, i will add some vaseline and try to rub it in a bit for him (he has been loving shoulder massages lately). Hopefully he will take the vaseline as part of the massage this time so he wont really care. We will add some fleece around the top too, thank you for the advice

The wound is looking really good today and i think its starting to heal really well. I dont see much scabbing any more, but i see more skin starting to heal over where the scabbing used to be. He is ignoring it a lot more too as long as there is no neosporin on it, so we have taken a break from that for a day. Because he has been fighting to come out and run, we took him into the bathroom and let him explore in there for about 15 to 20 minutes. He really enjoyed it. He didnt run at all (too small of a bathroom), but he bounced around happily sniffing the cabinets and the towel hanging over the side of the tub, over and over. His wound seemed unbothered by it as it didnt bleed or anything. He was putting all of his pressure on it while hopping around and he didnt seem to mind it at all. While in the bathroom, he didnt have the cone on (thats while i was glueing the sock rim to the cone) so he had every opportunity to lick the wound, but he didnt try, not even once. Im very surprised how fast rabbits heal, but it is very nice to see as well

Should i clean the cage twice a day instead of once a day again? He is now also rejecting hay unless he is out of the cone, but when i leave him out of the cone for more than an hour, he starts to lick his wound too much. However, he still chows down on pellets, treats, and cilantro. Is that ok, or should i start having more no cone sessions that are short?

One hour when we wake up, one hour in the middle of the day when i take a break from cleaning, and one hour before bed. He takes the majority of his no cone time cleaning himself but will stop every now and then to dig through his hay and eat before going back to cleaning. When he is cleaning his ears is usually when he notices the wound and starts licking that excessively. Wrapping it with gauze works for a few minutes, but once he finds the flap that connects it, he rips it off

If there’s swelling around it you should remove the scab and let it heal from the inside and out -deep puncture-wounds should not be allowed to scab over but be kept open. Otherwise bad bacteria that don’t want oxygen can thrive inside the wound, under the scab.

I tried googling it, but all google told me is that the wound has become cancerous if its black (i should have known google would say that, ha). No swelling or redness other than the red of the scab. The wound wasnt deep at all, but looked deep because its between his toes. The top part is already starting to grow skin, and form what i can see between his toes its starting to grow skin over it as well. The only part that looked weird to me was the black scabbing between his toes towards the bottom of his paw Around the edges where it healed the quickest, there seems to be fur starting to grow today as well

Also, nevermind on the ‘hay problem’. I gave him a handful before i went to bed, and when i went to check on him after two hours, the hay was all gone. So i added a few more handfuls, and after another two hours i checked on him, and it was mostly gone. Added another handful just in case, and when i woke up there was only about a handful left. Seems like he only wants to eat hay if he knows i wont give him extra pellets

Badger seems back to normal. He is trying to groom the scab when he remembers that it is there, but otherwise ignores it. He has to have the cone on for the majority of the day, but hes become very used to it at this point, and loves it to scoop up his hay (He never eats the top of hay, he has to bury himself to eat it. I think the scooping of the hay makes him feel buried). The wound is healing very nicely and already has fur growing around the edges. Hes putting full pressure on it and running around whenever he has the chance. He has even started trying to taunt the other two boys again, who are now very cautious/nervous when Badger starts his taunting. He even got mad that they werent reacting to his taunts and kicked sprayed on litter at them  Seems my little trouble maker is back to normal

I will update again after the vet appointment tomorrow to let everyone know what the vet says

The vet said we did everything right, and she is happy we did our research (posting here) about how to help the wound until we can take him in to get seen. She said his scab looks very nice and well taken care of, but because he does keep trying to lick it when he notices it, we should leave the cone on for another two to three days. She said to keep it dry and to add neosporin again if we see he is starting to irritate it again when his cone comes off. She sent us home with a weeks worth of antibiotics just in case, and let us know that we dont need a fallow up appointment unless it does become infected or stops healing over. Basically, he is clear! He was a little trooper, too, as there was a dog in the lobby that would not stop crying loudly (poor pup was so scared) and Badger didnt react at all while she was looking him over He also put on a pound since we were last there! We told her about his issue gaining weight and muscle, even though its in his file, and she was happy to hear that he gained some weight too. So this will likely be the last update. Thank you guys for the support and advice!
