› Forum › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › What type of bunny do I have pls? Any ideas?
Hi. I have been advised to do topic about this, can someone tell what type of bun my pippin is? My doctor said domestic black and that’s it.
So, his ears are not those floppy ones and his head is small, I have seen this rabbit in vets and hios head was huge haha…. so cute…. anyho… Hi fur is soft and short and black and if I go against it, it’s white inside what is strange but cute and his paws are dark grey and hairy … as you can tell this is my first rabbit and I don’t know what are the differences between types.
Do you know how old he is? And what he weighs?
He has the look of a large breed. Especially the ears look like a giant. Yet he appears to be a medium sized rabbit. Scale can be hard to judge in photos though.
There are many possibilities, but my best guess would be flemish giant. He has the right ears and shape. I was a little thrown off by the undercoat color, but I looked it up. The undercoat color is a “fault,” but a really common one in black flemmies. The breed is very popular right now, and the more popular the breed is the more of them end up at the rescue.
Size would be a good clue though, since it is one of the defining features of the breed. If his adult weight exceeds 12 pounds it is almost certain hes a flemmy. If his adult wight is less than that though it becomes less likely he’s a flemmy.
Age is important to knowing if you are looking at adult size or if he hasn’t reached it yet. He looks like he might still be fairly young in the photos.
he’s baby now. I got him about three – four weeks ago from the shop where they didnt know much about them and they said he is 12 weeks old. he is growing quite fast to be honest. what ”flemmy” means? And does giant means he will grow huge?
Thanks for having a look
I will weight him today ! omg I just googled ”flemish giant black rabbit” and it’s him wow
“Flemmy” is just short for flemish giant. We also call netherland dwarfs “nethies.”
Oh, okay, thanks I am so proud to have flemish giant ( I would be proud to have any type but I am glad i know what he is ) I will tell my vet to change it in system whooooo
My rabbit looks pretty much the same as yours except she’s grey and ginger with a white belly.
She’s fully grown now and is probably about cat size, just a bit smaller than a cat.
Her heads about cat size apart from her huge ears.
If your rabbit only gets a little bigger than it is now than I don’t think its a giant.
As far as I can see the giant ones, really are huge. So if it is a giant I guess you won’t have to wait long to find out
Edit: just found out, my rabbit is a “chinchilla giganta” which is apparently a cross between a Flemish giant and a British giant.
The “chinchilla” breed doesn’t come in black though, so It looks like you have a giant, not sure if he’s a Flemish giant or a British giant though. I think the British giants are not as large as the Flemish, but they are both still big bunnies
Oh, I see. since we have him ( about month ) he already expanded 40% of size …. I will see I have to keep measuring him and weight him too. I will weight him today and see.
what would be the difference between flemish and british giant? and if he’s not giant is he only flemish or british rabbit? or how do we call ”non giants” ?
Thanks and sorry for poor knowledge I am first timer bunny-wise lols x
I’m not sure what the difference is between the British and flemish giants, they do look very similar.
If he isn’t a Flemish or British giant then he would be called something different all together.
There are quite a lot of rabbit breeds though and I’m no expert. All I can go by is how much he looks like my girl and knowing what she is.
British giant is not a recognized breed in the US, not sure about elsewhere.
Giant breeds take longer to finish growing than smaller breeds. Most breeds reach adult size by 6 month, giants can take a full year.
Oh … okay well I will take a pic today how much he grown since we have him.
He weights 1868 grams now ( roughly ) and I keep forgetting how old is he I have him for a month so he is 17 weeks old? Oh I am horrible don’t even know how old is he lol …. so it’s about 4 pounds? But he’s growing and eating a lot too….
He may also be a domestic American breed with may be what your vet is thinking
Or a mix between the Flemish giant and the American breed
I guess you may have to wait and see how big he gets
The American breed is big but not giant
Lorree I checked your pictures and they are similar – but your type is not in black they are all in greys – but similar shape ! I don’t think he’s Dutch rabbit as my vet said today cause they have rounded heads and Pippin’s head is very pointy….. He is 4 months old and he’s 2.15 kilograms that is 17lb. at what age he will stop growing so I can tell what type is he?
xx
Where in the world did your vet get dutch from? He’s too large, he doesn’t have even a hint of vienna markings, his ears are too long, and as you pointed out his head is the wrong shape. Nothing I can see even hints at dutch.
I don’t think he’s a Dutch either. Hard to say when he’ll be fully grown, could be at about a year I think
I’m pretty terrible with breeds, but what the others said sounds reasonable. He is so handsome!
Thanks yeah, I will better wait and see. He’s on 2.15kg now and he expanded a lot but i am not sure if he’s giant cause I imagine giant rabbits to be HUUUGE watched alice in Wonderland too much ….
We have a flemmy mix. Her head and ears are similar to your buns. She’s orange and white and weighs around 13lbs.
When I first looked at your pics, his head reminded me of a mini rex. But he’s much to big! Lol
My rabbits definitely got some Flemish mixed in to her genes too but shes not giant, shes definitely got a similar head to yours kitty and brunosmana
So yeah the Flemish mix might be the one
Do you know what is strange? Always when I put to google ”flemish mix rabbit black” or ”flemish rabbit black” of ”mini rex black” I see exact rabbit as Pippin…. LOL …..I am giving up
But I see what you mean by flemish mix, that shape of head … BrunosMama and Loree your rabbits are very similar to him…. and they both have gorgeous colours … so cuuuute ! x
I guess there’s a lot of mixed breeding in the world which probably leads to different breeds looking similar
If he’s 2.15kg at 4 months then he’s going to be at least as big as brunosmamas which is 5.8kg and I’m pretty sure Boonie is around that weight too
The giant ones can be about 8kg
Yes, mine isn’t giant at all as he is not big and heavy enough. I had friend around and he used to have two giants and he said they should be bigger …. wow Bonnie is about 5.8? thats heavy little bun
Well she should be around that, but currently she’s quite underweight, the poor kid. hoping it’s nothing serious and she’ll put the weight back on.
But yeah I think your boy will end up about that weight too
Why is she underweight?? Hope she’s fine.
Not sure, it might just be that I wasn’t giving her enough food, or it could be something worse, obviously I hope she’s ok too.
Shes half her normal size. So i’m trying to fatten her up again
How do you do that? loads of food and treats? My bun grows so quick he loves almonds and curly kale and carrots, apples, cucumber or cauliflower base… he eats everything …. his fur changed so much now he used to be so soft like a baby and now he’s getting different not as soft…. I miss baby bun bun but love him more every day
Well I took her off of pellets a while back so I’m giving her pellets again and some extra vegetables. I’m not really sure if it’ll work or not but surely eating a little more than she used to has gotta help her put on weight.
I don’t want to load her up with treats. I want her to put on weight healthily.
You feed your rabbit almonds? I thought they were bad for rabbits?
No they are OKAY with them. They are not bad for rabbits but they can not be their main food I give him max three a day as a treat I have them in glass jar and as I call his name and shake it he runs like crazy to get some so I give him one and he eats it straight away. Vegetable and fruit and nuts is all what rabbits can naturally find in nature, therefore it could be given as a food or treat…. I buy him treats from shop too but only once every two weeks as I don’t want him to eat so much junk
That’s so cute
Hi there, any chance of having an up-to-date photo now that your bun is a bit older…..? It might help with the ID.
I’ve got a female Vienna Blue and will attach a photo when she was 3 months old – she doesn’t have white when you back stroke her hair but now 18 months old at 6kg….!! (my cat weighs 3kg! lol). She’s nowhere near a Flemish but is not a dwarf either !
PS: In the 1st photo there is an electric wire and plug…. it was the first day I had her home and it was immediately bunny proofed!
PPS: In the 2nd photo, the drink is not an ad… it’s my bunny equivalent of a geologist’s ruler or pencil in a photo to show the scale!!!
Hope that helps you.
OK so it helps to click on ‘insert image’…..!! Here they are !
Zoobie at 3 months – cute and small(ish)
At 1 year (ish) – still cute but (much) more chunky !!
Oh wow ! This type is very similar. Head shape,…. haha I like that excuse for Coca-cola (it’s not an advert) lol !!!
I need to take a proper picture today, I have this few from two weeks ago….
I think yours have little bit longer fur, it might be cause mine is younger maybe, he is changing it now…..I will take a pic of when I am going against fur how silver it gets….. your bun is so pretty !!!!
I think it could be Pippin too as I searched it online and they match well.
I have loads of pictures in ALBUM too
haha yeah those feet are so cute !!! I had no idea they have hairy paws …. just when I was going to clip his clawa I was surprised ”supercute” take a pic of yours if you are doing his claws I would love to see more bunny paws
Oh yes, How photos can be deceiving! Not sure it’s anything like my 6kg Vienna Blue !! Zoobie was that size when she was about 2 months old and when I asked the breeder if it was likely she would grow anymore, the breeder nearly choked whilst saying ‘ohhhh yes!’ !!! How little did I know….?!!
I can’t get paw piccies as she went through adolesence last Christmas and hasn’t let me pick her up since…… sniff sniff. (but loooves floor cuddles)
Oh, really? … wow your bun is big tho on that profile picture she looks huge !! … oh yes picking them up is a little bit tricky… I never pick Pippin up to pet him, I only do it when he has to get back in, and he knows it’s 30 seconds thing, so he stay still. When cutting claws he comes to me on the towel and I just twist him and he seems to like it my partner is talking to him and petting him and he’s so calm (at least looks calm) and I cut the quick. I say quick – they are black so as quick as black claws could be done what colour are your bunnies claws?? Do you do it at home yourself or in vets?
My rabbits not happy about being picked up at the moment, cos she knows every time I do it, it means I’m gonna check her out and put ointment in her eyes.
But normally she doesn’t mind it so much, as long as she can sit on my lap and get loads of pats.
Though she would prefer floor cuddles.
I wish she was her normal size so I could show u an up to date photo of her but she’s tiny at the moment. All skinny, she looks like a baby rabbit again.
She hates getting her nails done, it’s a real ordeal with her, she has some white/clear ones at the front which makes it easier but the rest are black
Oh bless her I hope she will put some weight on soon… I am looking forward to some pics of her !! ….. yeah white nails are heaven ! haha I use nail file to make them rounded too as if I only clip them he would rip our skin…
I think in general, they just hate being picked. Very strange, cause I would expect them to learn that we won’t drop them and they are safe.
Pippin always goes behind sofa so I barricaded entrance with my crochet bag and towels and yesterday after two weeks of not going there he run across the room, jump on indoor clothes drier and jump backwards on crochet bag and behind sofa I was like ” how the hell…..” and he remembers! He knows now how to do it LOL so clever !!!!! Couldn’t believe …. once something is done, it’s remembered … I learn new things about him every day
(now I feel like mums talking about their kids here haha )
