This is my first actual experience with abscesses and dental abscesses.  A few weeks ago I noticed my rex, Emmy, had a large lump on the side of her skinny old rex face so I took her in with my other appointments.  Turns out she has some kind of facial abscess and it's affecting a tooth way way in the back that my vet doesn't feel comfortable dealing with so we are going to my dental vet for treatment.  We tried for the first week to treat with baytril and metacam to see if the swelling would recede and my vet tried to get the pus out but was not successful with that.  She wanted to wait 2 weeks but I took her back after a week since her little face was swelling more and her eye is tearing on that side.  So we decided that better to make the dental appointment sooner rather than later - I've just been doing metacam for the past week.

Funny and good thing is that the abscess is not affecting her diet and she's eating well - not sure what it will be after tomorrow for a few days though.  Luckily I have metacam and buprenex and critical care if needed.

So tomorrow I drop her off at the dental vet for treatment - hopefully this won't be as bad as some of the abscesses I'm reading about.  I'm almost tempted not to do anything since she's eating but I know that would not be the right thing to do.  It looks like she has a huge wad of gum she's saving in her cheek.

Well, unfortunately the vet said the infection and inflammation were to severe to extract the tooth safely today so...she packed it with doxirobe gel and wants me to do metacam and baytril for 2 more weeks in hopes we can get that down and she can extract the tooth. She was able to get a little of the abscess pus out but it's so thick. She mentioned pasturella which I know is common for these things. I guess right now we are still at a wait and see. It's so close to her brain though so the vet is worried about that as well.

Please continue healing vibes for my Emmy.

vibes for Emmy! At least the vet got some fluid out, it must be relieving some discomfort in her mouth? I hope the medications will work! How is Emmy feeling/acting now?

Thank you for asking. She ate her greens last night so she seems to be doing fine. I really hope that we can get the infection and swelling down so we can get the tooth pulled.

Healing vibes for Emmy!  I hope she can get the extraction done soon- I am sure the AB's and pain meds help- but it has to be a relief to get it pulled- I would think it can't hurt any worse than an abcessed tooth. I have had an abcessed tooth- and I know as a human it is really painful- of course in humans it is usually a root canal as treatment.

Glad to hear that she seems to be doing well and hanging in there!

oh geez, I just saw this thread, Sarita, I'm so sorry to hear about Emmy. It is funny how the abscess can look so bad and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. Keep eating Ms Emmy. Let us know how she's doing.
