So I’m getting waaay ahead of myself here… but I really really want to get a third bun- I won’t actually look into it until I get a new job and probably move and have a bigger apt, etc…. so it’s still a ways off… but I was wondering what combo might work easier for a bonded trio. I have a bonded male and female right now so I was wondering if there’s any general rule as to whether it would be easier to add a male or female. I’ll do the whole bunny dating thing and will ulitmately decide on a third bun based on personality, I’m just wondering if there are any generic “rules” for adding in a third. (One of the reasons I’m waiting to get a third is in case the bonding doesn’t work and I end up keeping the third separate- in which case I would probably end up with four eventually!)

I have seen all different types of trios, but since I don’t have a trio personally, I am going to email the leaders that have multiple bunnies and have them check out this thread.

I’m interested in this too. Since I now have three bunnies; male & female-somewhat bonded, and now the third is another male, but a small bunny, all altered and about the same age. I am curious to know if size really does matter when it comes to bunnies, do the larger ones dominate the smaller ones, which gender gets along better, etc.
And of course, personality is key…so it’s going to be interesting getting these three to get along. ~_~

I have a bonded trio, two females and a male. In my experience, the same sex pairing is the most difficult part. If you have an alpha diva female, you might try adding another male to the mix. If you have a dominant male who is really put off by other males, you can try adding a second female. Be prepared to take it slow, and don’t make the mistake I made of introducing all 3 at once. You should do the initial introductions one on one, doing the new bun with the existing bun of the same gender first, then the new bun with the opposite gender bun from the pair. If both introductions go OK, then the three can spend some time together. As with all bonding setups, neutral space is key, you have to get the pai out of their usual area so that they do not gang up on the newcomer.

MimzMum, the size of the rabbit has no bearing on the bond. Age may play a factor, as most rabbits will tolerate babies they don’t know, but the physical size does not matter. In our trio, the little 2.5 pound dwarf is the boss. She is the one that tries to hump the other two all the time.

I like your strategy there, Osprey. I’m going to try it out when I’m sure that Fiver is better socialized. (BTW, he’s coming along swimmingly, we had much out of pen playtime and binkies today.) ^_^

I think the Diva (Pip) approach may have made my trio all the more appealing with your advice there. I thought Mimzy, being my first bunny (for the last year and a half), would be the alpha male, but since Pip has been with us about 9 months now, she is definitely taking the lead in the relationship. I sure hope it works out. And if not, well I can still give them all the attention they need separately if necessary. I’m kind of hoping that Fiver will tip the scales towards a more friendly warren of three in the end.

That makes sense! I’ll probably be looking for another male then given my two buns…. now I just need to wait a year until it’s time to look for a new job and apt and I have room to add a third!!!
