Today I spotted a mouse trying to get a my rabbit treats. I usually keep them in a large bag but since this mouse was seen I switched to a hard plastic container. Although mice are cute they scare the crap out of me knowing they're running loose in my house x.x my questions are will this mouse torment my rabbit? What can I do to keep it away from his food bowl until he's caught? Can this mouse get my bun sick? And finally any tips on catching mice? Idk if I want to kill it it seems mean but ugh... :'(

My cat brought in a live mouse once. We bought a humane trap that`s sort of like a teeter totter that traps the mouse inside when he goes for the food. Any hardware store should sell these. We put a piece of cracker with peanut butter on it as bait and caught it the same day. We drove it about 5 minutes away from the house and released it.

I`m not sure there are any mouse to rabbit illnesses to worry about. Some other members may be able to help you out there. We`ve had a few mouse discussions here before.

I would suggest not leaving any food out until he`s caught. Supervise your bun while he`s eating and then take the bowl away.

Any idea how he got in the house?

We've had mice twice since moving to the country. i know the feeling-your so worried about potential harm to the bunnies.

Here is my thinking....

Mice are everywhere-they live in (re; poop, pee and eat) in the fields where your hay is grown....where the hay used for pellets is grown. If there was some potential to cause disease, we'd all have that disease in our bunnies.
I think should you have an illness in the next year, you mention to your vet you had mice -so they can take that into account if it applies. But honestly mice are peeing and pooping and eating the food supply so I don't feel it could possibly be a risk. Additionally in England bunnies often live outside and quite a few members have posted pictures of mice eating with the bunny.

I would suggest not using poison-they can die in the walls of your house, or be eaten by cats or dogs and kill them too. If your going to use live traps, ensure they can't admit more than one mouse as they will fight and it could be a while before you find them. I prefer the snap traps-they are quick and don't pose a risk to anyone else in my house. Peanut butter works great.

Now the most important thing-you must go inspect your house for how they got in. It can be the size of a dime. It could be on a vertical wall or the roof. Call a professional if you need to. If you don't find where they came in and seal it, they will be back.

I'm gonna try a humane trap with the peanut butter. And my mom is home all the time now so she said she'd watch Felix's food bowl and make sure he's okay I hope I catch this little guy. I noticed that he chewed on the treat box this morning, but there's no way hell get in because its super thick plastic. I feel bad for the little mousey :/

I have tried that and can't seem to catch the mouse we have. Blue has come close several times chasing him. LOL I think he thinks he is a cat. he chases right after it and when he doesn't get the mouse he thumps and then bikies away LOL

If you use the catch and release humane traps be SURE to check it often, or provide water inside of it - mice can and will dehydrate and die if trapped too long with no source of water, which is a slow and painful way to go. And make sure it will close securely after one mouse enters, so you don't get two fighting to the death inside a cage.

We have one inside our house somewhere, it lives in the walls... boyfriend has seen it. They aren't the disease laden monsters some media would make them out to be though, so they pose little risk to bunnies in the short term.

We caught Algernon in a bucket. We made "steps" out of books and boxes up to the top of the bucket, laid an envelope over the rim of the bucket, put the treats he was going after in the end and waited. When Algernon went after the treats, gravity took over and he fell into the bucket, couldnt get out and was safe.

I seem to have a mouse problem too. Its in one of my hay bins i just don't know which one lol

Haven't caught the mouse yet. But I found mouse poop under the dresser this morning. Checked in the dresser and in the clothing and there was nothing! They sure are sneaky lol. I was only worried about my bun getting sick because there was mouse poop in the bin that had his bags of treats, but the treats were safe inside the bags and I put them in the hard plastic container now so he should be safe x.x
