I just got Frankie neutered on Thursday and the vet tech said to wait about a week until I let him out of his x-pen cage so that he can recover, which seems like a long time. Well, the day after surgery he was shaking the bars begging to be let out and he hasn’t stopped. I read on some other websites that it’s okay to let a male bunny out after a few days of recovery (as long as they’re not jumping on things and binkying), but I just wanted to see what other people’s thoughts are. I’ve been monitoring his genital area and everything seems to look normal (no excessive swelling, redness, discharge, etc.), and his behavior and eating habits have been back to normal since Friday.

If you can provide a small exercise space for him with nothing to jump on, you can try letting him out sooner than that. Girls really should be confined the full week, but boys generally recover quicker.

Thanks Beka27, I’ll probably let him out for a short while tomorrow. He’s got a whole room to himself so I’ll make sure I keep his activity limited to that space.

I felt the same when when I got bandit neutered..I knew he was going crazy in his cage since i always let him out everyday for a couple hours..but as long as he’s not jumping he’ll be fine..just keep checking the area until its healed

So I let Frankie out for a little bit today and even though his room isn’t huge (it’s the 2nd bedroom in my 2-bedroom apartment) he kept on binkying like crazy! I checked his genital area again and everything looks fine, but should I be worried that he’s binkying a lot? If so, is there anything to help him not binky, as funny as that sounds, lol. Though I can’t say that I blame him, 3 days is a long time to not be let out of a cage.

I got my rabbit neutered on Monday and today is Friday I was wondering if I could let him out already although he had a bad habit of jumping on and off the beds

                    Hi Robyn
I think it would be okay to allow him more freedom now. If you think he will still want to jump on the beds, pop a low box next to them that he can use (hopefully use!) as a step. That way he won’t be fully extending when he jumps. I think it would be difficult to restrain him from jumping entirely, if he’s feeling good.

This thread is from 2012, so I will lock it now so there are no more responses. It can get confusing knowing which issue is current and which is not. Feel free to start a new topic if you have further questions though.
