I have been buying the Kaytee timothy hay 48oz bag at Walmart for right at $7 but have also been getting Oxbow alfalfa hay 15oz for around $6 at Petsmart. Since having 5 rabbits now I am going through hay like crazy. The Oxbow brand hay looks so much better quality then the Kaytee timothy hay I have been getting. Where does everyone get their hay online for the cheapest price?

It’s not they hay that is expensive, it’s the shipping.

I like American Pet Diner (the gold which is second cutting) or KMS Hayloft (Kleenmama’s hayloft) on-line.

However you might look locally as well at some feed stores if you have a place to store a bale.

I was about to say the same thing, it’s not the actual cost but the shipping that’s killer. Do you have an Agway by you? you can check the store locator to see. I live in NYC and thought it would be hard to find a bale of hay I could buy, but I realized just a fun 40min drive a way I can buy a 50lb bale of hay for 12$ and a 50lb bag of quality feed for 20$.

The online store that I’ve found to have the cheapest shipping charges is Drs. Foster & Smith,  They charge $5.99 for a shipment, and if your order is $49 or more, the shipping is free. They have Oxbow Hay and American Pet Diner Hay, along with some other brands. Other places I have ordered from charge a good bit more for shipping, even on small orders.

I wanted to ask what do you guys think about Sierra Valley? Also, how do you know if the hay is rabbit safe if it were to be bought from a local farmer?

I have been buying my hay from Sierra Valley and find the hay to be fresh. I am in TX and I pay $63.95 for 45 lbs from Sierra Valley or I buy 2nd cut timmy from KMS Hayloft — 45 lbs for $58. I wish I could find local hay that my bunnies will eat.

I recently bought hay from Sierra Valley and have been pleased. My bunny seems to like their orchard grass hay much more than Oxbow’s. He really loves their oat hay. It’s filled with these little oats that he totally loves. If I refresh his litter box he’ll stop eating his carrot and start digging in, searching for the oats. It’s really cute.

I buy mine in mini bales from here, BB’s store. The shipping charge is for an amount that lasts so much longer and is less expensive than many other brands. I know it sounds like a plug, but when the cord is cut on the condensed hay, it’s a LOT in a Mini Bale. I just checked the shipping calculator for BB, and for my zip code it’s about $9 for shipping. If you have other things to buy, like willow ball toys, etc., it usually doesn’t add onto the shipping charge so becomes more cost effective.

Thanks guys. I normally buy hay from BB but the shipping is insane for me right now.

Are there any feed stores around you? I find that is really good as well. I got a 55lb bale of Orchard grass for $14. I used to buy online, but as I’m a broke student, I can’t afford to buy online anymore. Good thing my picky girl likes the feed store hay.

Thanks everyone! I do have a feed store very close by. I will go by there and see if they have any hay. Is there anything in particular that I need to look for when buying hay from the feed store? All shipping charges from the websites are way too expensive so i’m hoping my feed store carries hay.

There is a link that one of the members had posted on what to look for in good quality hay. I’m not on a home computer so I don’t have the bookmark. I’ll post it when I get home if no one has beaten me to it.

You’re lucky bunnyluver. I don’t have any feed stores near me that sell hay that I trust.

Yeah, feed stores can be tricky at times. The one that I go to doesn’t sell live animals, they just sell animal feed, tools, and have an entire shed devoted to hay. Feed store hay can really help with costs and a happy bunny.

Thanks everyone! I actually found a bale of hay at my local feed and seed store today. A whole bale of timothy hay for $8, much better then having to buy little bags for close to $7.
