        Hey guys,

I posted a couple of weeks ago because Wilbur was sneezing a lot! I gave it a week or so and he got a bit better and I wasn’t too worried because he was eating a pooping normally. Though this week he got a bit worse, very red and damp nose so today we went to the vets and the vet seemed to think he has snuffles , so an injection and prescription of anti-biotics later I leave with a one stressed bun .

Anyway, my question is, is there anything I have been using, bedding, litter ect that is wrong? I first used carefresh bedding for his bedding and litter. I then used wood shavings for his litter but quickly took it away when I read it’s a no no! I am now using straw for his bedding, which tends to look slightly dusty but wasn’t sure if that was normal? and compressed paper pellets for his litter and some hay.

Any input would be great ,

        Thanks guys!

        x

I’m not so sure about straw, but bunnies don’t need any bedding in their pen, just in their litter boxes

I only use the straw in his cage as he doesn’t have a pen, he just hops about in my room, though I think i’ll use something other than straw soon and see how that works.

              hi ! (:
i had the same problem a week ago ! i thought my bunny had the snuffles but i just got back from the vet yesterday, and my vet said that she didn’t have the snuffles, it was an infection. they prescribed her some antibiotics which seem to be helping with the nasal discharge, though she is still sneezing. i use aspen shavings in his litter box but i don’t use any bedding whatsoever around the cage because i think it’s unnecessary.i used to put towels but she would gather it up in one corner and never lay down on them. if she pees i quickly wipe it away and the poop around the cage doesn’t really cause a problem to him or me ! i really recommend not using straw bedding as it can get dusty, just use the aspen wood shavings or newspaper based bedding in the litter box only ! make sure that the hay that you are using doesn’t have to much dust as it can cause your bunny to sneeze.

              – hope i helped

Well snuffles is really a catch all term for an upper respiratory infection – a URI is a bacterial infection so there is nothing environmentally that you can really do, if that is what the problem truly is.

Ok, I’ll stop with the straw then, but as he’s not litter trained yet (just not getting that hang of it at all), I’m not sure what to use?
To be honest, I don’t think the vet was 100% sure but she wanted to give him antibiotics to get rid of any infection that could be there, Wilbur doesn’t have any discharge as such, just a damp nose, all the fluid is clear.

Good news though, I’ve found a rabbit-savvy vet that I am going to register him with very soon.

Removing the bedding will probably help with litter training Having it in the cage often just confuses them. Stick with it just in the litter box

Oh ok, never thought of that! Will an ordinary cotton blanket be ok? Or does it have to be rabbit friendly material?
                      Thanks guys.

I wouldn’t put anything down, unless its a wire floor. Most of them prefer to lay on the bare floor anyway Even a cotton blankie could confuse him.
