        Hi all!

Thursday I was home with my bun and the dogs, my oldest dog was laying next to my feet and had in his mouth one of those card board rolls that go inside toilet paper? well I keep those for the bun to play with, my dog grabed one and the bun came to close to it and I guess my dog got mad and snaped at him causing a broken tooth, I have no idea how this happened, I know my dog didn’t bite him but somehow something got caught up in Pancho’s mouth when the dog moved breaking his tooth, I ran to the vet and they took x-rays, she said he has no trauma in his skull or jaw, but the tooth is damaged, it’s one f the lower front ones, he was bleeding and everything, I don’t know who was more scared him or me, the vet said that since their teeth keep growing eventually the new one will push the broken one out and it can grow and get back in place or it may grow crooked, I’m so upset, it hurts me so bad to see my bun in pain and not be able to eat normally, I pray that his tooth will go back to normal but I’m so scared it won’t and he would get infections or something else, can anybody give me some advise please? I’m freaking out so bad….

        thank you

Did the vet offer antibiotics and/or pain meds?

Well, I’m as so sorry. I know you just must be beside yourself.  It was a good thing you were there though.   It looks like you may have to keep them separated when your dog is possessing something.  So just look at it as  a learning lesson that ended up okay. (I have heard of much worse stories, so what happened though hard, at least wasn’t deadly)

Obviously he if meant to hurt your bunny he could have, so his "warning" may be just  knocked their teeth together.    SO now that you know this about your dog, you can take preventative measures.

So don’t punish yourself, and look on the positive side.  Nothing horribly horrible happened.  You’re bunny is alive, and you did exactly the best thing for him and raced him to the vets.

Just keep an eye on it so to make sure it is healing okay.   Hopefully they did give you some Baytril or antibiotics.   And if they did give that to you, then I suggest giving it to him after he eats, and it can make some bunnies nauseous.

Also, is he eating at all? or do you have to force feed?   Make sure he is eating and pooping.

FYI Rucy is missing one of her bottom incisors (due to abscess/surgery) and she eat just fine. I do cut up some of her leafy greens to make it easier for her.

          My thoughts are with you!

            Thank you BinkyBunny,

The vet did not say anything about antibiotics or pain med, I guess she thought it wasn’t necesary, his gums are not purple any more, he does have trouble eating hay, he seems to be able to eat soft foods or leafy vegetables, the carrots he can’t chew I guess it’s too painful, I took baby carrots and put them in a little water and then in the microwave for 2 minutes until they were soft enough, then I let them cool down and gave them to him, he really liked that, the hay when he tries to eat it it looks like it gets stuck and he can’t really cut it apart and swallow it, poor baby. =(
The poop is really small, I guess it is because he is not eating much?

            Thank you!

You can also take pellets and add some water. That will soften them up and make a mush if you want (just add more water)
I am really surprised no Baytril and pain drugs were needed, especially being in the mouth. Hmmmm. Well, I’m not a vet.

Just keep an eye on him and watch to make sure he is eating and pooping. If by tomorrow morning he’s not doing much of either, and he seems in pain when he eats. I would call the vet, and let him/her know, and ask if they can give him pain meds to make him more comfortable.

Again, I can just imagine what you are going through. It’s so hard to see them suffering. I’m sending peaceful vibes to you and healing vibes to him.

Oh my, we’ve got some territorial issues happening and it might be best if you keep them separated for a little while so your rabbit can heal.  Like BB said, a knocking of the teeth or what-have-you can cause it.  Luckily it will grow back and just breathe and relax.  It is not the end of a bunny if it cannot eat "the usual way."  There are always dietary adjustments that can be made. The tooth will grow back and it is only a chance that it might be crooked, not that it will be for sure. I am rather shocked at the vet for not offering pain meds.  Perhaps you may want to go to another vet.  There is a Bunny-savvy one in Denver from the Colorado HRS chapter web site:

                http://www.coloradohrs.com/vet.asp?whichvets=2#emlist

I know that Dr.’s LaBonde and Guerrera are pretty much the bunny-gurus here in CO, but it would be a drive for you.

Thank you guys, yeah I checked the Colorado HRS site and the vet in Denver is far away from my house but if I have to take him back I will go there, I just don’t get a good feeling from this other vet, I don’t understand how she didn’t offer meds, any way, he is eating a little more I have to soften the pellets, he still has problems eating hay, I’m so worried, if his tooth falls off which is what the vet told me was going to happen, will it come out again? and if it doesn’t and she need to pull it out will it grow again? I don’t want him to loose his tooth forever. =(

Oh good! I’m so glad you will seek out the other vet if need be. I too was a bit shocked that nothing was given. Also, IF the worst case scenario happened and by chance his tooth never grew back, he’d be okay. Rucy only has three incisors and she eats just fine. So please don’t worry about that. Bunnies are amazing resilient.

                    Keep us updated!

                      Thank you BinkyBunny,

Last night I was crying, it hurts me to see him struggle to eat, he is not him self any more, I haven’t seen him run and play or do his funny jumps, he just lays there, sniffs, hops but nothing else, last night I had to feed him by hand, little brat would only eat that way, he is getting a little to spoiled hehe, he wouldn’t eat if I put the food in his bowl or floor but if I put it in my hand he would eat it, even the pellets that he hasn’t even gotten close to since the accident, I just hope he starts eating more, the hay he can’t chew at all, that’s painful to see him try so hard, the vet said his tooth was loose and would fall off by it self but last night I looked at it and I don’t feel it loose at all, it’s growing more and sticking out in front of his upper teeth, should I take him for the vet to extract the tooth or what should I do?

                      thx.

It sounds like it is very painful for your bunny and your bun not eating so well is not a good thing.  The bunny GI tract has to keep moving or you risck GI stasis.  My recommendation would be to take him to the rabbit-savvy vet (I’m so sorry it is so far and I know $$$ too) and have them take a look at it and tell them about the distress your bun is going through and ask for pain meds.  If you are not happy with what the other vet told you (I know I would not be), by all means, get a second opinion. Or, as an alternative, call the bunny savvy vet, tell them exactly what happened and what your concerns are and see if a vet visit would be recommended.  That way you save a trip all the way across town if the vet feels it is/was not necessary. Peace of mind is priceless and I really hope your bun feels better.  Have you tried feeding canned pumpkin (not pie mix)? Mush some banana around in there too, baby food works well also. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber and nutrients and serves well in place of hay. Now is he licking up the food or are you using a syringe?

                          thank you Scarlet Rose,

I will try the pumpkin, I didn’t know they could eat it, yesterday he was doing much better, he was eating hay too, not us much as he was before but at least he is eating some, he loves romaine lettuce, I try to give him fruit too, apple, a little banana (he loves!) peach and pear, he likes baby spinash I’m not sure if spinash is safe for rabbits, and I caught him eating the dog’s food!! he would not eat his pellets but the dry dog food he would, and those are pretty hard nuggets! any way I told him no and gave him his food instead, this bunny is really making me grow some white hairs! hahaha I love him so much. =)

You’re welcome! That is very cute of him, be sure not to let him eat dog food (a little nibble is OK). Spinach should be given sparingly as it can cause urinary tract problems. Fruit, no more than a 1/2 teaspoon per pound of body weight per day. Be sure to exclude the apple seeds if feeding your bun apple as they are toxic and can poison a bunny. It sounds like he is feeling better and yes, they can eat pumpkin, make sure it is not the pie mix, you want just the pure 100% pumpkin.

He is doing much better, eats everything again, the only thing is that his front tooth is getting too long, I’m going to have to take him to the vet to get it trimmed, here goes my question, do they have to put the bun under anesthesia just to trim his teeth? is it fast? and is it expensive?

                                thank you!

                                  Hi Maghy7,

I have never seen it done, but my understanding is that for front teeth, the bunny is not put out, they just clip them like they would a bunny’s nails using a special tool.  Has anyone actually been there when a buns teeth are trimmed?

Thank you, I guess I have to take him to a special place huh? I can’t take him to any grooming place?

Geez!! I just called a vet to ask how much will it be to get the teeth trimmed and she told me $50 for the exam, $25 for anesthesia, and $15.00 for trimming, wholly cow!! never thought this would be so expensive!!

Hmmm I have not taken a bunny to a vet for a teeth trim before – but its odd to me that they would put him under anesthesia because I have always heard not to pu t a bunny under anesthesia unless is essential – and I have seen bunny’s teeth trimmed before without any anesthesia. Also – I don’t see how an exam is necessary because it shoudl be quite obvious that one tooth is longer. The owner of my rescue had to do an emergency trim one time and she did it at a pet store – and while this is not recommended as it can sometimes hurt a bunny’s tooth – there was no anesthesia, and any ordinary person could tell the tooth needed to be trimmed.

Maghy, have you had the tooth trimmed yet? I’ve actually trimmed teeth myself (a vet showed me how to do it), with no anesthsia. I think it is really odd they want to put a bunny under for something like that. Unless of course it is the molars, I hear that vets sometimes will put them under for those.

Leo had several teeth trimmed and one removed.  He was anesthetized for this.  While he was under they trimmed his nails extra close for me.  I didn’t have to pay for any exam, b/c the vet discovered the teeth prob during a visit.

I live in the Philly area and I pay about $35 for an exam.  He had 4 teeth done….w/ anesth, pain meds, and antiobiotics I believe it was about $150.  It was actually the cheapest pet issue I had this summer,  I’m much more comfortable having my vet see the buns, rather than rely on my own knowledge or info from friends.  I have a neighbor that’s a dog/cat vet and even she told me that she wouldn’t feel comfy giving bunny input.

Once I established a relationship w/ my bunny vet, I get frequent discounts and even get answers over the phone from the bunny tech and/or vet.  I really love my vet practice!  I actually switched my cats to this practice b/c they are so good.
