Franz really likes toys that dispense treats (in his case just pellets). I took an egg carton and put some pellets in each depression, then I closed it and gave it to him. I have a video it's so cute! His ears are perky and he picks it up an shakes it, and tosses it over his back! He was doing binkies later and was really happy. I totally found something tht makes him feel silly!

I'll have to try that! Thanks for shraing. Do the pellets fly out when Franz whirls the carton around? Or do they stay inside? I guess if you clamp the egg carton shut, they stay inside. Do you poke holes in the carton so he can smell them through the paper?

There's already a hole above each depression and he smells them right away. He shakes them out and sometimes they fall out and he eats them, and he just works till he gets them all out either by shaking or opening it

Great idea. I will have to try that. Minnie and Maddie go crazy for pellets.

Ahem. I'll second that.
I went a bought a carton of eggs made of cardboard so when I use them up I can have a new toy thing.

I need illustrations, photos, home movies, diagrams, 3 page instructions written in English/Chinese/German/Spanish/French with little stickers corresponding to the tools and parts list on the carton and toy pieces themselves and a folding out rug sized manual to follow....

you get the picture. Thanks.

BWAHAHAH! Cactus! "IN MY FACE!!"

This is the conversation I had with my dad when I asked if he had an egg carton:

Me: Dad, do you have any empty egg cartons?
Dad: Do you need one for Koucha's toy?
Me: O___O.............. (How did he know??)

That is a great idea! I know my bunnies like to chew on the cardboard egg cartons but I never thought of putting treats in there and doing what you did. What a simple, yet brilliant idea! I'd love to put that in our "Toy Test" Section. Do you mind?

I don't mind at all! I've actually been Finding other things to hide treats in as well; some things didn't work out so well like my 2 liter pepsi bottle lol.

Okay, it's now officially the current toy test!  http://bit.ly/bbToyTest    I just announced it to on twitter and facebook, so hopefully there will be many happy bunnies tossing around egg cartons. LOL! It was funny to watch Franz flip that carton so high he almost flipped himself. Rucy used to do that -- brought back fun memories.

My boyfriend actually slow motioned it and it's pretty amazing; he stretches out almost 2 1/2 feet off balance. I'll try get him to jazz it up and I'll post an edited version. I laughed so hard at the slow mo it's adorable! Thanks for making my toy popular lol <3

Thanks for this great idea! I gave it to my two buns to try yesterday and they loved it! It look a few minutes for them to get it, but they did in the end! I posted a video for everyone to see. Note their great teamwork on rolling the carton. Also, I love how waffle and marble comes up in the beginning to say hi and waffle says bye in the end (marble was too occupied with the carton... hehe) =) Enjoy!

That video was so cute! I love how they get a method of taking turns flipping it lol it didn't take them long to figure that out. My egg carton has sloped holes so Franz couldn't just roll it to get the pellets out, he had to shake it! The carton also had holes that were *almost* big enough for him to get the pellets which made him go crazy. Your bunnies are so cute! I love their ears <3

sigh, I can't get Nilly to play with it. Soooo, I will up the stakes, I will make her some of her favorite treats. If I can find the original thread, I will repost the recipe, I haven't heard about a bun not liking them yet!

ok, found it!

It is called How to Make Nutritional Rabbit Treats-

Place two small carrots and a banana in a blender and process on "puree" until very smooth.  Add a half- cup of rolled oats and 1/2 C of your rabbit pellets into a grinder and grind up very fine.  Blend until smooth with the carrot/banana mixture and roll out between two pieces of waxed paper, then cut into small cookies.  Cover a cookie sheet with foil and place the unbaked cookies on the sheet. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. and place the cookies in teh oven. Turn overn off after 30 minutes and let the cookies remain in the oven until cool.

I was lazy and just spread it out over the foil and baked it as a whole thin blob!  Then I just broke it off into pieces to store. Nilly loves it!

I will have to warn you though, the buns can smell them cookie and they are like a cat with catnip. At least my Nilly is anyways! lol. She ran up to me every time I entered the kitchen! lol. I always cook them at night, then leave them in the oven over night to cool and break apart the pieces in the morning. She was a happy bun this morning!

I hate to be a bad guy. I took a Safe Food Handlers course in August, 2010, and it was mentioned that salmonella bacteria can be present on the outsides of eggs which means also on the inside of the cartons. I know egg cartons have been used in kids' crafts for years and probably nothing bad would happen as a result of using an egg carton for things other than its original intent, but since my course I look at things a lot differently than I used to . . .

Hah, I tried that with a few pieces of bananas and closed the lid. And My dear Mellow didn't even try. She sniffed it a little and just hopped away.

Still a good idea

That's interesting about the salmonella.
I wonder if it can be killed by something like a white vinegar and water spray? Or washing it in something and rinsing and then leaving it to dry? Cardboard can retain it's shape and dry if not soaked through. Seems easy enough to clean if the right viral cleanser that's not harmful for bunnies is used.
